The empeg is standard euro-DIN size, yes. Its dimensions are the same as any other aftermarket "full-pull-out" radio.

It is not quite the same as a detachable-face radio because those don't pull all the way out. The outer dimensions are the same, but detachable face radios only remove a smaller portion of their faces.

There is a remote possibility that your dash trim might be big enough to remove a faceplate, but not big enough to pull out the whole stereo. It depends on your make and model of car. If this is the case for you, there are some notes in the "installation" section of this BBS on how some users have worked around this problem.

Actually, they changed that to "Deutsches Institut für Normung" (German Standardization Institute), as it is used far beyond just industrial products.

Oh yeah, was my concern too, but luckily there are replacement panels for the dashboard that have a standard DIN fitting. Actually this is good, the other radio is wider so you now have more space to fit the empeg in.

Fittin an aftermarket stereo in a volvo can be as troublesome as bmws' i guess. Somehow they need to make the integrated stereos as large as possibil, to take as much space as possibil. The same goes for various american cars. Atleast the few difference ford explorers and chevy blazers/tahoes and surburbians that i've driven.

No worries replacing the factory stereo in my V70 wagon. The original was a double-DIN unit, which slid right out. I replaced it with a single-DIN Blaupunkt head, and dropped the empeg sled in the top half. Did have to do a little Dremel work on the plastic sleeve in order to have something for the sled tabs to grab in, but that's about it.

Yeah, yeah, I know, "empeg is all you need," but I can't seem to get traffic and snow reports delivered in advance, yet.

AND, of course, there's that issue of having a (very)significant one who's technology-unhappy and still uses cassette tapes and demands you having some kind of tape player in the car too. That's why my Blau Reno ended in her car, and why it will have to get back to mine to fit in my Golf's second DIN slot - when I get the money for my empeg, that's it-

I have a 740, used an adaptor and it fits perfectly. I'll post pictures when the round tuits arrive.

I am thinking about getting an X-5, but this is the first concern I had when I looked at the dashboard...how the hell do I mount my Mark II and head unit in there?

Where can I find out more about these aftermarket faceplaces with DIN openings? Also, the BMW dealer said something to me about the wiring not being compatible.. ???

Ask a good car audio shop - that's their business, if they don't know, nobody will.

Every BMW dealer says that, what is true is that the integrated headunits have BMW specific stuff built into them. They use the same clock (actually not sure WHERE the clock is in a BMW, the actual circuitry I mean.) for the radio/cd/cass unit and the onboard computer. The multifunction steering wheels have some controls incorperated into them for the BMW headunits (which are blaupunkts in disguise last time I looked). That sort of things. But to my knowledge there is nothing incompatible about wiring that can not be solved with a good adapter which is readily available in stores. You might loose a little bit of the tight integration (i.e. the clock and the steering wheel controls) but that is it.

Anybody here have any idea about that clock though ? Does the clock-circuitry reside in the integrated headunit or is it outside of the headunit ?

As for din-adapters, they exist for sure for the 3 series so I would think they are available for other models too. Not having seen an X5 yet I can not guarantee it though but it would seem very unlikely that they do not exist. Ask an installer in your area, I am sure they have more info on that. I doubt there is an online resource for this though. The 3-series faceplates sell for like 25-40 $US over here making it a pretty low-key item.
