Hey guys, I am installing my new PCATs tuner, and I noticed my sound from my speakers is going in and out, and it's when you jiggle the wires in the back of the sled.
Is there a way to take that apart, and tighte the wiring or something ??

I don't want to put it all back in my dash, and just hope that is happens to be sitting the right way, and works fine, like it has been luckily up to this point.

Thanks
Tim

Greetings!

A little careful soldering, as described in the FAQ, should do the trick.

OH man, I was hoping I wouldn't have to solder, I suck at it!

Since the docking connector pins depend upon making an uncontaminated contact, if you're not good at soldering, I don't recommend that you do it yourself. You could make it worse by doing the job poorly.

If you know a friend who's good with a soldering iron, download the video for him and have him do it.

I just watched the video, and it didn't look too bad, but if it has to be really precise, I might be better off letting someone that is very good at it do it.

Ben (mrfixit) built my tuner for me, maybe I can contact him and have him to it.

Thanks guys for the info!!!!!

It's not so much that it has to be really precise, it's just that it can't be sloppy. If you get solder or flux onto the contact area of the connector pin, you'll make the docking connection for that pin go bad, meaning it will be just as intermittent as (or worse than) the original loose wire.

Is there anywher to just get a new one ??? That way would be quicker than me sending the connector to have it soldered.

The only place to get an assembled docking connector with crimped wiring harness is from support.

If you want to buy your own docking connector assembly, it's (a) hard to source and, (b) comes in pieces so you're still stuck with having to assemble it anyway.

Support is linked from the FAQ, which was linked from the entry about the loose wires (which I know you read because you watched the video ).

It's Rob Schofield at the moment, and he's temporarily offline, so you're going to have to either wait a while, do the work yourself, or find someone who can do the work for you.

As far as repairs go, this one is almost trivial, IF the sled is not currently installed in a vehicle. Any 14 year old aspiring scientist could probably handle it (standard nerd skills).

If the sled is wired firmly into a vehicle, then repair is trickier, but most any decent car audio shop SHOULD be able to handle it.

If you're anywhere near Ottawa Ontario, stop in and I'll fix it.

Cheers

I can get the sled out of the car.
Ok, now I have to try it since you said any 14yr. old could do it. LOL

We soldered the wire back, but man those connectors were hard as hell to get out.
I saw there was a couple of connectors attached to an RCA that I wasn't using, so I took them out and used those connectors, is that OK if those are gone ??

If it sounds fine, then no problems!

There's a small trick to extracting the pins from the connectors. Once learned, it's really easy.

The RCAs are front/rear outputs (left/right pairs) and an AUX input (left/right) - if you don't have it hooked up to an amp (or another music source in the case of the AUX input), then there's no difference signal-wise if you remove the lead at the back of the harness, or keep it.
