Lite-On IT claims to offer world’s first DVD recorder capable of writing CD-R/RW discs

my only problem with this is that i know for a fact that my dvd writer also writes cd r/rw discs. and, without further research, i am fairly certain that mine does not stand alone.

Maybe they mean a stand-alone unit? Maybe with a single laser?

Regardless, the way the press release is worded, it's definitely wrong.

They're talking about a consumer electronics piece here. DVD video recorder.

Um...yeah, as far as I know, every DVD burner can also burn CDs.

There were some way at the beginning that could only burn DVDs, but I doubt that anyone makes one anymore.

It's not a great price either. Of course, you get what you pay for.

And here I was reaching for the credit card so I could be the first to own a dual layer DVD burner...

Right, but the lite-on actually write to both DVD+ and DVD- media, whereas this one only writes to DVD+ media.

My main interest in it lies in the fact that they don't make the number one selling point that it will replace your DVR. I like my Tivo. I don't understand why Philips and Panasonic seem to think that their units can compete at all in this aspect.

In short, if someone made a tuner-less DVD video recorder, I'd seriously think about buying it.

Wanna bet? I've got one here that does not burn CDs.

Yeah, like Bitt said, I rushed on that one. It's just that when I did the research for my burner, I didn't come across any that didn't, and it seemed to be a given instead of something that was advertised. I stand corrected.
