Get out of bed scratch me nuts and have a SSS the have breakfast

Then look out the door and spy the 7 looking very sorry for its self and very dirty

Spend entire morning washing it polishing all the bits to polish washing the bodywork getting the gravel out the footwells and genrally slaving away till about lunch time

Have a nice lunch look out the door and spy the 7 gleaming in the sunshine

Fail to resist the urges and go for a good blat

Come back it is dark and tea time

Get up the next morning and spy 7 looking very dirty

I've done this for about 4 days now

I've had 8 days and put 1000 miles on it and i only have a 5000 mile insurance policy and my bmw now drives like a tractor.

Also i got the karam now and it is good for motorways for when i discover myself a bit further from the house then i should be and i need to cruise back via a motorway. I found mself in dundee this evening and it was all back roads so had to cruise back via the motorway as it was geting very cold and dark

I suspect I don't want to know what a "SSS" is.

...though a quick google search includes "Singlehanded Sailing Society" on the first screen, which is amusing.

That's pretty standard English. Maybe not quite Queen's English (*) but certainly in common usage.

Just kidding mostly; I do get the gist of the message, We got SSS down, and that is a good start. Now can someone define blat and karam and tell me what a 7 is in this context (a car obviously, but other than that I am clueless)?

blat: Go out for a thrash in the car. Possibly named after the noise that the exhaust will be making.
karam: Typo. He means Karma, I think.
7: Caterham 7. It's a car.

Jeez Paul, you just need to drive through the automatic car wash at the end of the drive. Problem solved.

Of course, it opens up a whole host of new problems. I'd say start with swimming goggles and a nose plug and go from there....

Yeah, I was going to say something similar. It's not a language barrier, it's probably more of a cultural one. I also had no idea what you were talking about until I saw 'BMW'

It's things like '7' and 'blat' and just how its written that meant I had no clue what was going on If someone talked entirely in American slang, with words and grammar that's only used here, you'd probably have an equally hard time I often don't know what the Brits on this BBS are saying (hell, I often don't know what Americans are saying on other boards).

That said, I still don't understand your post. The best I can figure out is that after 1000 miles, your car doesn't run well because it's dirty? I don't really understand

The 7 is an open-top sports car that's rather rare and specialist. It looks a lot like those old '60s-era cigar-shaped indy cars. If you've ever seen the old TV show "The Prisoner", the main character drives one during the opening credits.

His problem is that the car gets dirty when he drives it, so he spends all his free time washing it. And he can't resist driving it.

Think of the red Ferrari in Ferris Bueller's day off. Remember how Cameron was so worried about it because his dad "never drives it, he just wipes it with a diaper." Well, that's the sort of thing we're talking about here.

Well that's understandable. Actually, I think the main confusion was that the way he worded it, if you didn't know what a 7 was, you might confuse it with the BMW he mentions, which now I gather is a different car. That's where I was confused. I thought it was an actual problem he had where his car got dirty and it wouldn't drive well

What Thinfourth is saying is that he can't bear to see his new pride and joy dirty so he has to clean it, and every time he sees his new pride and joy clean he feels the urge to drive it, thus making it dirty again. This is a problem because his insurance policy is only valid for 5000 miles per year(*), and at the current mileage rate is going to be invalid in about 32 days time leaving him with a car that he cannot drive for another 325 days.

(*) This is a popular option for sporty/expensive 2nd cars, where the annual premium would otherwise be extortionate.

Ahem, someone rang?

While I'm at it, for an idea of what a 7 looks like, see my avatar. [in my profile, if not along side this post].

Its a picture I lifted from "The Prisoner" DVD (of course I have the series on DVD) :-]
Of course I'm sure Thinfourths 7 is much better than the one McGoohan drove in the series.

Hmm, I must look thinfourth up when I'm in the UK later on next month - If I ask nicely Paul, can you take me for a spin?

[Going to be up near you anyway, the Falkirk Wheel is on my must-see list of things to see]

Of course, thats if you're not at sea then.

On a bit of a tangent here, but I think the 7 is what they modeled the LX4/6 after in LFS.

The Falkirk Wheel has to rate as one of the most bizarre pieces of functional art ever. Make sure you take a lot of spare film / memory cards for your camera, there is much to look at.

You want to ask a boat owner if you can hop up it with them - the view is excellent!

The falkirk wheel is a wonderful thing i should really go and do a proper tour

Occasionally things like this manage to survive all the sensible people and get built

another favorite of mine is the angel of the north near newcastle which had loads of folk complaining when it was put up.

Absolutely - the wheel and the angel of the north are projects I am very happy supporting, unlike that big dome thing that popped up in London a few years back. I am so impressed that somebody thought up the wheel and seriously over-engineered it.

The angel always cheers me up on a long drive back from the far south - lets me know it's only 2 hours to go until home

I agree, A1 bad - so if I am on the east, I get to Newcastle and then use the A68 and associated roads (A68 has no cameras at the moment). End up coming through Jedburgh after a good zap over hills. When I've been down in Cornwall I always come up M5, M6, M74 and A702 which does give a good wake-up after the boredom that is motorway driving!

Oh, Boo-Hoo!

You mean, you only get 13 weeks a year vacation? How ever can you stand it?

Especially when for the other 39 weeks you get to laze about in the lap of luxury, relaxing in the gentle tropical breezes aboard ship, maybe occasionally having to change a spark plug in the ship's engine or something...

Hmmm... D'you suppose it just might be a bit more involved than that?

Thanks for pointing the Falkirk Wheel out, it's curious, but typical, that it takes this site to make one aware of it. I haven't had a conversation with anyone who knew of it since reading this thread and couldn't find a leaflet about it in the tourist information racks anywhere in my 10 days in Scotland.

I was also put off by the directions, and the reference to park and ride. I wasn't going to leave the motorhome with all our possessions in a park and ride, but the directions speak of awkward roundabouts and single track roads. I phoned the day before to ask whether it was possible to get a 23ft motorhome in the car park and they didn't seem at all sure.

So I'm really glad that I went, and found that it was really accessible and had more parking on site than they could ever need. I found no difficulty in getting the staff to let me stand on the gangway of the boat where I had full visibility.

The only anxiety was that one of the boxers decided to go for a swim in the top pond!

I've forwarded this message to the British Waterways Board.

Apart from that 10 days of Haggis, Neeps and Tennants - ideal!

Yes - advertising for the wheel is pretty non-existent. Glad you went and enjoyed it.

Where else did you go? If memory serves, most of the days you were here must have had pretty good weather, which always improves the experience.

must have had pretty good weather

Moffat, Oban(2 days), Fort Wiiliam, Morvich(On the Road to Skye), Kinlochewe, Culloden, Blair Atholl(Avoid the pub snacks if you're passing that way at lunchtime!), Edinburgh (2days).

We had two days of torrential rain up in the NW, otherwise fine.

Incidentally, thanks for the Nepalese, really enjoyed it, a great find - Cris's Indian was also very good, but the service was over the top, push them out in to the street as quick as possible.
