Greetings.

I've got one of them Mk2 jobbies; had it for a couple of years now.

For the last several months I've noticed what I perceived was corruption in my MP3s. Symptoms were squeaks, whistles, pops, etc.

These symptoms always appear after the player has been turned on for a little while. From 'cold', there are no symptoms. This clearly rules out problems with the MP3s themselves or with their transfer onto the unit.

I'm wondering whether it could be a RAM problem or HD problem. Syncing occasionally seems to take forever and sometimes the player hangs during transfer.

Is there any way to determine whether it is RAM, HD or something more nefarious that's causing this problem?

Thanks

R

It's most likely HD related. Check out this FAQ for some troubleshooting techniques.

Yeah, Bitt's right. It's most likely disk trouble. For future reference, there is a very specific FAQ entry about pops and screeches in the MP3s.

Note that since the problem seems to be temperature related, the section of the disk trouble FAQ that you'll want to check first is the bit about the faulty solder joints on the IDE header.

Gents

Thanks for your speedy response. I have just ordered a new (larger) hard drive; the internals of the player seem to be okay, as do the connectors.

Thanks for the speedy response.

Cool. Make sure to go through the drive upgrade guide carefully, step by step, when you do the installation.

I think it highly unlikely that the drive is at fault -- if it still plays at all, then the drive is functioning and the fault is more likely the IDE header, or maybe the cable crimps.

Cheers
