Hi All,

I have a MK2 and also an Apple powerbook. I want to be able to transfer my mp3s from the powerbook to the MK2.

The kit that I have came with a serial cable, but that will only work with desktop machines, not my laptop. Is there any way to hook up the MK2 to my laptop? USB? some kind of adapter? and will it work the Jemplode (which version)?

Well, the obvious way to do that was by reading and finding the right place, and then posting.

As to your question, use ethernet, or get a USB-serial dongle. deluo.com has one for ~$10, you need a pl2303 driver to use with it, I don't remember where I got the driver but I have it somewhere.

pl2303 = Prolific 2303 which is a common USB -> serial chipset

And by the way, to reply to something that was said in the crossposted version of this thread:

Paul is right, you do need player firmware version 2.0 final in order for Jemplode to work properly. So check that (from the "About" menu on the player) first. If it doesn't have it, you'll need to temporarily borrow a friend with a PC in order to apply that upgrade. You also might want to take that opportunity to install the latest Hijack while you're getting your hands dirty with the PC. You know, get it all over with once, so you only have to do the ritual hand-washing thing once.

I've hooked up the player to my G4 powerbook via the ethernet port and downloaded the latest version of Jemplode (the one with the pic of the dog in the splash screen).

I checked the version of the firmware on the player in the About menu and it says "2.00" Is that correct or is there a version called "2.00 Final"??

Anyway, so far Jemplode doesn't seem to recognize it. Actually, sometimes it says "No device found" other times it says "Music Station 169.254.111.115" but when I click that and click "Ok" it doesn't pull up any playlst???

So.. do I need to update the firmware? Is there another problem?

I finally got it to connect. It just downloaded all the playlists. I'm going to attempt uploading a bunch of MP3s soon.

FYI-

I tried using a crossover eth cable to connect directly to my powerbook's builtin ethernet port and made sure it was 10baseT. Tried fixed IP on same subnet, and even DHCP. never worked.

So, I hooked it up to my router. The player picked up a dynamic IP in the same subnet as my powerbook, great. Still could not connect.

I should mention that Jemplode could see the player on the network with the right IP, but never could load the playlists, until...

I switched back to an older version of Jemplode, v. 2.0b1. Worked instantly, no problems.

What gives?

I wish I knew that before I bought one.

Anyway, yes, I did try both ways, not that it matters, I guess.

Like I said, it could pick up the player, just couldn't read anything from it. It stayed in a perpetual "Loading" state.

It wasn't until I switched back to Jemplode v2.0b (or whatever) that it worked.

I also noticed that my older version of Jemplode came with many more support files. The latest one I downloaded from jempeg.org only came with a single file, jemplode.jar.

Anyway, it doesn't matter too much, I guess. It seems I can do what I need to do.

Anyone know if these files will also work under Xwindows? I tried using java -jar but no luck.

If you mean the X Window System, then yes, the latest jar (and the previous ones that I've used) work fine with X (on Linux) for me. Did you say which version of Java you're using? (java -version). I'm on 1.4.1, if that helps.
