For the past month or so I've been having a horrible time getting songs on the player. Every time I would try to upload things the player would crash. This happened with Emplode and JEmplode. It would also happen with ethernet and USB uploads. So I reformatted the hard drives (I have a 60Gb and a 20GB) and started over. Once I did that, I was able to reload roughly 50 GB with no problems... then it once again crashed at the end of the other 15 GB. Then I went on a trip and it acted up the whole trip. I got back and resynced and it said there were problems loading the player configuration. But I got it synced and all was well (Ths was Sunday night). Then yesterday I tried to upload some music to the player and once again, a crash, which leads to having to do a fsck and database rebuild. It did this overnight and this morning I was able to load songs in no problem..

It appears I have a problem somewhere.. but no idea where. I'm running v3a7 and Hijack 383. The other odd thing I'm noticing is that in the playlist count it is often showing "s!!" next to the track count list and before the time count. It shows up on some tracks and not on others.

Anyone have an idea what the problem might be or if there even IS a problem. I did not have the problem until going to v7, but also didn't have the problem with a7 for a month or so after upgrading

You might want to look for drive problems (cable and IDE header).

This is explained here.

Regarding your troubles: As Paul said, I'd look for problems with the cable and IDE header, along with checking every single other thing in this list.

However, if I were you, I'd start by going back to version 2.0 final, which is known to be stable and reasonably bug-free.

Tony... thank you once again... the only thing I don't understand is I've NEVER marked any tracks... I wonder where that came from...

All the more reason to suspect disk weirdness or to downgrade to 2.0 just to verify the environment.

I believe that one of the reported bugs in 3a7 is that some tracks are getting unintentionally marked.

OK... after checking all drives and stuff this weekend it appears there's something else wrong. AS now I am not always getting a connection through the ethernet port. The link light comes on, but I cannot ping the player or make any connection at all. I thought I'd seen a post not long ago where this was a bad chip but I can't find the post anywhere... Anyone have any ideas?

Yup. Confirmed by a few others too. Most annoying for me in particular .

Is the player supposed to be using DHCP, or a static IP address?

Check it by using the MENU-->ABOUT-->(scroll down with knob).

I had the same problem with intemittant ethernet connections during upload / sync in Emplode and Ws_FTP. I ended up re-installing Hijack and my problems went away. I'm not completely sure why Hijack would have anything to do with this, but it worked for me. I normally sync my players with Ws_FTP and I tried the Hijack route because I thought it was something to do with my FTP connection to the player.

I removed the small drive as it was not connecting well for some reason. It is using DHCP and shows nothing on boot. Oddly enough I've been having this intermittent ethernet problem and the upload crap since Hijack 380 or so. Someone else reported the same issue then, but I had made some changes to my system so I could never trace it to one or the other. I know most people have had no problems... perhaps I shoudl go back to 379 or so as I downgraded back to 2.0 final and it has not solved the problem
