Any ideas?

I don't want to use an inverter.

I bought a Daytek P871 DVD player (cheap price and advertised size was small... too bad it is actually double the advertised size!!!)

I have already torn it open to find a power supply board that takes the 120 volts and converts it to 12 and 5 volts and -24 volts.

Basically the PS board only had 2 connectors used on it. One going to the DVD drive portion and labelled "COMBO" "CON3" (connector 3 I assume) with the pin out being +12v GND GND +5v.

The second connector (and the one that worries me) is labelled "VFD" "CON4" with a pinout being FL+ FL- GND and -24V. The GND connection is not being used on this one. There is another bunch of wires going to the VFD from the DVD drive portion so I think I can safely assume that this CON4 is the power for the VFD.

I don't want to worry about CON4 as I figure I can simply pull that connection and run the player without the VFD turned on... but I am too afraid to try it for fear of flushing my $$$ down the drain and it being a pain to return as it means a 6 hour drive. (Not to mention the warranty sticker being torn (though it was sent to me that way!))

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to proceed? Ideally I'd like to leave the current power supply in the box and add a second one with a few diodes and basically choose 12 volt or 120 volt via a switch and power cord on the back of the unit.

I am searching for 12 volt computer power supplies but I don't know what it would take to get that running and what the FL- and FL+ connections are (as well as if the -24V would be available).

The power supply board is silkscreened with WAN NIEN on it and 101V0 and 0333. It also has a sticker labelled MODEL: AM453B and REV : C 0333.

I don't have time to pick the exact model, but I know they have what you need. Then you'd only need to wire it up.

12 volts to 5 volts is easy - just use a 7805 with a heatsink (since it will be drawing more than the rated 1 amps most likely). For -24V you could go over to bg micro and get a couple voltage doubler/inverter chips. This wouldn't provide much power but I suspect it doesn't need much on the -24v line. Now I'm sure people here with EE degrees are going to find this solution horribly inefficient, but it seems like it would work.

I'd suggest rewinding a bit... You're doing the 12v conversion because you're planning on using it in the car? I'm skeptical that a cheap off-brand home DVD player would work well in an automotive environment. Heat would kill it quickly, and it probably wouldn't be very vibration tolerant.

Of course, real in-car DVD players are hella expensive, so I see why you might want to do a hack like that. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

There isn't much in the box in terms of guts so I don't think heat will be an issue.

Price is one issue and also portability. I am hoping to make it work off of 12 volts so I can use it in our camper on rainy days. I want to avoid 120 volts if at all possible for no real good reason other then it's something I want to do.

Hopefully I'll have some pics tomorrow of the guts.

Pic 1 is the entire power supply

Pic 2 are the 2 outputs. The one on the left is -24v, GND (Not used), FL-, FL+
The one on the right is the same as a computer power supply. +5V, GND, GND, +12V
