Lately whenever I click on a photo that is on the web (I use Internet Explorer), instead of a filename name popping up (as a .jpg) it comes up 'Untitled' and is a bitmap, not a jpeg. It is very annoying. I have heard that it is a bug. however, the only way I found around it was to delete all the temporary internet files. It would be good for awhile, but then I would have to reset it again. Any ideas on a fix for this?

Nope. I get exactly the same problem as well and it's usually because IE has gone a little odd and decided to leave several thousand old files in the cache. Clearing the downloaded program files folder also sometimes helps.

several thousand old files in the cache

I don't get that problem, and my IE cache has just shy of 12,000 files in it. Clearing out the cache from time to time can't hurt, though.

Clear your cache. It always works for me.

Or, if Firefox doesn't quite do it for you (it almost was enough for me but not quite), then try MyIE2. I've seen the problem in IE you described but haven't had it happen since I started using MyIE2. It may be because MyIE2 doesn't have that bug, or it could be because I've got it programmed to clear my cache (but not my cookies) each time I exit it, so my cache never gets too messy for the bug to appear.

These files hang about even if I tell IE to clear it's cache. I've no idea why they're being forgotten by IE.

Is this the same problem recently discussed on Ars Technica? Along with clearing the cache, they advise deleting any "unknown" or "damaged" programs in %systemroot%\Downloaded Program Files.

Try reading through the discussion from the previous link. In particular, somebody mentioned CacheSentry will fix the problem although I didn't see it listed as a fixed bug on their page.

When I used IE I installed CacheSentry to fix the untitled.bmp problem and it definately solved it.

there has to be another solution....Does this CacheSentry have to be running all the time for it to work?

When I installed CacheSentry, it completely b0rked Internet Explorer. I had to uninstall it, and poke around in the cache directory myself, before it would work again properly.

Just a warning.

i tried decreasing the amount of file space dedicated to the cache, but that only helped for a little while. any other ideas besides getting a different web browser? it is really frustrating....
