Hi ..

I am having a strange problem with my player that i'm having trouble sorting out and wondering if anyone out there has any ideas?

This just started happening today...

When the player starts up the display shows:

Loading Music Databases...

then

Loading Playlist...

then

Loading Music Databases...

then

Loading Playlist...

and so on!.. forever!! (stuck in a loop!)

I would be grateful for any suggestions, or how to go about fixing it!

I've sorted it... and the answer was in the FAQ (of course!)

Just ran the player without a playlist and all is well..
(must have a duff track on there somewhere !)

And Brad, if a playlist hits a nonexistent FID, I think it should (in theory) just skip it without causing a reboot like that. I'm not totally sure of that one, though, so you could be right.

I know it will (or used to) freak out a player. I think I had to do a Control - C to get out of it.

I did have to do a CTRL-C to get to the bash prompt.. however to begin with i thought there was more of a problem cous' i could even get CTRL-C to drop to the prompt! - turns out i had the flow control setting in Hyperterminal set to "Hardware" instead of "None", so nothing i typed would have worked! duh!

Mmmmm..... beer...

Now the trick is figuring out which track made the player crash.

When you do find it, hang onto the bad track somewhere. We might want to check to make sure it doesn't crash the 3.0 (Karma-era) decoder.

Hmmm.. well i guess i'll just have to wait until it happens again... unless you have any ideas how i can find it?

First let's assume you've got the MP3s on your PC's hard disk. Now look at your whole collection and decide which files are your own good rips, and which files are dreck downloaded from the internet (if any). Begin your search in the latter subset.

Then go through and start looking at the tags on the files. Excessively large tags (such as those which include album cover JPGs embedded in the tags) have been known to cause problems.

Then analyze the files with one or more of these tools and see if they show any anomalies.

If you find anything suspicious in your search, then try to queue up one of those files on the player and see if it crashes.
