Ghosts in the Machine ?

My Empeg whilst docked seems to have a mind of it's own !!
I leave it on so I can stream from it, bit it seems to turn itself on (ooo er) randomly
I think this is related to the Vol Knob problem, as sometime the Volume bar comes up, but mostly the player just comes out of standby.
Anyone else have similar experiences / or solutions ... ?

Somebody sending serial commands to it? Or perhaps commands over the web (weren't you talking about leaving it web-exposed in another thread?)? It's what Mark was talking about when he said that stripping down CharcoalGray's interface isn't enough, you also need to disable certain commands in hijack itself.

Which Hijack command(s) would I use to completely disable commands ? I've read the FAQ but I don't completely understand.
The player has been doing this for a while and has only today been web exposed. It is also web exposed behind password protection anyhow.

Hm, then take a look at the other threads about people's players waking up in the car, it's been discussed before, I don't know if a solution was found.

Not found, but I have a slight update on that one. I have been using a backup player in the car while my primary is being "enhanced". I find that I am no longer having the wake-up problem, and that it is going to sleep properly.
I suspect that it might be one of the first symptoms of the power source indicator leaf switch starting to fail. My guess at what is happening is that the switch is seeing bounce, and it is enough to trigger the player (with power being provided through the sled connector) to recognize a "change in power state" and boot.

Dragging up an old thread here as I'm having the same problem. It was happening in the car today. I first I thought it was the IR picking up a bit of sunlight and powering up, then it happened a few more times. I now have the Empeg (2.0 final, MK2A) in a Mark Lord dock and its doing the same thing. Has anyone nailed this down? Tomorrow I'm setting the standby to 1 second so at least it won't power on in the car while I'm parked somewhere. Yes, I almost always take it out, but I do forget sometimes esp at home at the end of the day.
Oddly enough my Sirius radio also started acting up today, changing channels by itelf. Perhaps something's in the air?

Since this thread was posted, there have been more instances of this, and most of the causes were tracked down.
Unfortunately, the FAQ is down at the moment, and the Wiki doesn't have all the troubleshooting topics entered into it yet. Hm. Wonder if there is a cache...

Nope, not cached that I can find.
I seem to recall the most common cause of this is either "Lost Interrupts" due to a solder joint problem on the IR receiver, or stray signals from the stalk interface.
There was a hijack command to disable the stalk interface, a BBS search for it should come up with the relevant thread.
For the lost interrupts problem, watch the serial port and see if you get a bunch of lost interrupts messages.

The latest Hijack versions also include fixes for a potential cause of problems like this -- the extmute signal bouncing around.

For what its worth, mine was caused by putting a package on top of my remote which was in the passenger seat. tanstaafl.

Mine did the same when it had a worn encoder. Wiggle the volume knob around gently without turning it. If it wakes up, time to replace the encoder.
If you look at LTJ's post at the top, I'm sure he's definately got this problem.

Yep, that's it. Damn, I had just got this unit back from Stu to fix the IDE header.....

Okay. This looks simple enough to deal with in Hijack. I can have Hijack just *ignore* the knob when in "sleep/standby" mode. A button press (any button) will still wake up the player, same as now. Vote:

I don't imagine you can just make it an option in the config.ini?

All HW and SW should have Mark-Lord-support! Thanks for your time and energy!

Yeah thanks Mark. I think my player may be doing this too. My rotary encoder is worn, but I deal with it.

@mlord
btw. can you also hijack some tuner-code ??
The RDS is able to switch between different frequencies offered by the RDS radio station but it only remembers the last used frequency when you turne back to the tuner after using the tuner for a longer time. The problem is that you drove out of the region where that special frequency was usable. When it is able to remember all the other frequencies the tuner can start a search if one of tha frequencies can bring back the radio station.

Chrsitian
