Well I thought that, since I'm probably the only person on this board, I'd keep the trends going...
So, when do we see the HSX in Europe then?
Cheers,
Paul.

In fact the first European showing of it will be occurring at my 25th birthday party tomorrow night.

I was going to attach a photo to this post, but it appears to be broken.

Mind you though, you've probably got one with a real case, but hey! See-through perspex is cool, doncha know!
Happy Birthday, Toby. Have a pint on me.

If the photo was bigger than 100k, that's what happened. Is that what happened, or are uploads broken on the BBS again?

Quite a lot is broken. I had problems uploading the file, and when I went to delete my post, I got this. I suspect that it's trying to unlink the attachment that's not there.

Photo is here. This is the alcove in the house that Toby and I share. You can see the HSX-109 in perspex, Toby's empeg, Toby's amp and various assorted African memorabilia.

Frigging big ain't it?
How can I convert my spare empeg into a mini HSX to serve up MP3's to my family of Rioreceivers (twins are on the way so that'll make 5 with the DDAR triplets).

This one is covered in the empeg FAQ.

From the FAQ
Although it is possible to port the server software to Linux and run it on the car player (someone actually demo'd this very thing at one of the user meets), the database code eats up a lot of memory. So having the player be a server and also having it continue to work as a player at the same time probably isn't going to work very well.
But the hardware spec of the HSX is very similar to the empeg
From a post by Rob on the empeg BBS
206Mhz StrongARM
16Mb RAM
1Mb Flash
320x240x4bpp greyscale (OK, bluescale) screen
CPU utilisation is far nearer the max than with the car player, as this product background rips and encodes.
Rob
So why not?

Rob made a comment recently about the HSX being more 'multi-threaded' enabled than the Empeg.
Can't see why the Empeg can't be used as a server [only] - with the right software and I guess as the stuff is GPL'ed its only time before it happens.
Nor for that matter is there any reason you couldn't make your empeg a RioReceiver I guess.
That way at boot up time you could decide do I want car player mode or RioReceiver Mode or HSX 109 server mode...

The database on the empeg is kept completely in memory. On the HSX-109, the disk is always spun up, so we don't have to. This gives us more room to play with -- plus we have swap.
