By default, the songs under "Artists" soup are alphabetical by song title and can't be re-ordered. This was a specific request by Dell when they cut the deal with SonicBlue. It is anticipated that if/when the product gets another software release, this will get fixed.

In the meantime, work around it by creating .M3U playlists. You can order playlists any way you want, and the player will respect that order.

I think I'll put this one in the FAQ.

OK, from top to bottom:

The cabinet is a Tech Craft TFR500. I like it a lot. My speakers are Acoustic Research HC-2 system. My TV is a Panasonic PT-47WX49 47" rear projection HDTV. I think my home theatre setup is complete for now. I used to have a 27" TV, LaserDisc player, Betamax (VHS was in there also), Sony STR-DE945 5.1 receiver, and Apex AD-600A DVD (hacked) a couple months ago. This setup rocks and the Rio Receiver just makes it that much better.

I am in the process of building a small PC for my closet that will act as the server for Rio Receiever. It will be wireless. Wireless rules.

Do they make a DirecTivo box that includes an HDTV decoder yet?

I don't mean Tivo-for-HDTV, I know they can't do that yet. I mean is there yet a single box that has:

- Standard-def DBS Satellite
- Standard-def two-tuner Tivo
- Hi-def DBS Satellite decoder
- Hi-def Over-The-Air decoder

Unfortunately, no. The series2 DirecTiVo due out later this year is rumored to not have HDTV capability either. I don't know why they wouldn't make one... I would definitely buy it.

Is that UPS noisy?

If you mean does the UPS make noise, no. It is a small desktop UPS, it has no fan. On the other hand, I put it into battery mode once and it did make noise through the stereo. That could be a problem, but I use it mostly for power quality and surge protection.

BTW: Y'all quit drooling over the STR-DE945, since I have to give mine up I really like the unit (except for the $#!@^%*& remote), but there are higher priorities right now, so I'm selling it off (which, curiously, is about why I don't have my empeg any more. Sigh.)

I have just been reminded that the Jreceiver software also works around this. I have updated the FAQ.

I also worked around it by including the track number in my song title / filename, zero-padded. That still left the "can't listen to all of an artist's albums one after the other" problem (which JReceiver also addresses), but I figured if I really wanted to do that, I could've made the titles "<Album> <Tracknum> <Song>".

Instead I built the multicast listener and wired the whole thing up to Obsequeium so I could throw songs onto the end of the queue without disturbing what was playing

Just updating the pics of my install. The Orinoc Ethernet Converter wasn't working right through that hub. In reality only one device can connect through that thing. So, I had to put my gateway router in the stereo cabinet. I need more than one port in my stereo cabinet because of the Rio Receiver future considerations for a TurboNet adapter. Now that my only wired ports in the house are in my stereo cabinet, I sync my empeg from there as well.


I chose on top of my fridge for placement of my MP3 server because my fridge makes enough noise that the computer noise wouldn't be noticed. The closet would have also been a good choice if there was an easy way of getting a grounded outlet in there.


I put the wireless NIC next to the server so it wouldn't block the cabinets above from opening. The machine is a Celeron 466 with a 60GB drive running Windows2000. The only wires used are a power cord and USB cable for the NIC. I use VNC if I have to do anything on it.
