Sigh. I've just read about a mysterious registry key that will keep the Windows automatic updater from installing the Windows XP SP2. I'd like to stall it for a few days on several of my machines.

Unfortunately, my searching zen is weak today, and I can't seem to find it. Anyone 'round here seen it (the registry entry, not my zen, silly!)?

thanks,

my search fu is strong, see the part that says Configuring Automatic Updates by editing the registry
I have disabled windows update via group policy on our network, I know SP2 will break a few of our apps and I'm not going to deal with 100 users if it *mysteriously* gets installed

I found that one, thanks.

The reference I saw was to blocking just the XP SP2 update, but allowing the updater to continue to download fixes for other things (e.g., the IE patch du jour ).

Geez, is MS really forcing updates without even confirming it with the user now? How hard is it to pop up a window saying "We've got an update for you that will hopefully keep your computer from becoming even more buggy, virus infested, and spy-ware ridden that it already is. Would you like to install it now?".

Not hard at all, but most f**kers out there just click "No", thus leaving their PCs open to worms, trojans, and the rest. Hence the motivation to make it completely automatic for home users.

Anyone intelligent enough to make an informed decision about whether to install the patch or not ought to disable automatic updates. In the meantime, leave it enabled, I say.

I can't argue with the point that a lot of people are not qualified to make these decisions for themselves, but any sort of forced upgrade like this is going to break a lot of stuff. Microsoft doesn't exactly have a history of smooth, hassle free updates. I just wonder how many people are going to reboot their computer after an automatic upgrade only to get a nice BSOD or find that some software they rely on no longer works and have no idea why or how to fix it.
