Well,

I invoked the empeg hijack upgrade script, and the laptop futzed halfway through the upgrade. The empeg was rebooted, and now it just goes to the blinking LED. So far, I haven't been able to see anything via the serial connection.

Additional Troubleshooting anyone? Did it totally erase the flash? Am I forever hosed? ;(

try reflashing with 2.00. if that works to get it back up, try to apply the Hijack upgrade again.

The only thing is, I get NO output from the Empeg when it boots up (via serial) This leads me to believe that I can't flash it anymore?

And nope, it doesn't seem to be working. The LED just continues to blink, to taunt me.

There is virtually no way to kill the empeg via a bad flash. More likely, you have an incorrect serial cable (not a null-modem cable, that is) or you've set up your terminal emulator incorrectly (115200 kbps, 8N1, no flow control).

No, there's no way that you personally can put the player into that state without a soldering iron.

Try again, but this time, leave the power cable unplugged from the player. Only apply power to the player at the moment that the upgrade software prompts you to do so.

If you're not doing so already, use Tony's Logo Editor to do the flashing.

Does the laptop have a proper serial port on it, or are you using a USB/Serial adapter?

The upgrader often doesn't work with USB/serial adapters, and should be used with a proper serial port where possible.

It's probably just a matter of making the timeouts more flexible in the empegUpgrade software, but whether that'll ever get done is another thing...

Roger,

It was a usb adapter. I got the unit back to my house, tried flashing the kernel (via both the download.c, then I went to WinXP and used Tony's editor) No luck. Finally just went and threw the 2.0 beta on, and it came back to life.

Phew. sorry for being such a knob.

Why beta, and which beta? Should be 2.0 final.

Do you mean the flash didn't work, or that the flash worked but the player didn't work?

If the latter, then maybe the kernel file was corrupted during download, or was the wrong file. Remember that the flashing tools make no effort to ensure the file is a "good" file. They just blindly write the bits to the player.

If the former, did you get an error message?

Quite possibly. Not certain though.
