What's wrong with it? Most problems can be sorted out without needing it to be shipped anywhere. Failing that, mlord may be happy to take a look at it. He's going to ask for a boot log first though!

Hi,

I'm in Ottawa, and I bring dead Empeg/RioCar players back to life.

But first, you'll have to tell us what's wrong with it.

Cheers

Yeah, what he said. It might not even need repair so much as just fiddling. Have a scrape 'round the troubleshooting section of the FAQ and see if you can learn anything.

Sorry... I thought of that after I left yesterday.
When I turn it on ( it just comes on) in the car or the house, the rio logo comes up then it changes to the next logo and freezes. Then nothing works, none of the buttons, etc.
I have looked at the archives and found that it could be a loose conection inside ( or a bad disk ) I am sure there are ways of fixing it, I am just not confident to do it my self. I alway believe, let the experts do what they do. So I just wanted to take it somewhere. I spoke to the Rio folks and they said they do not repair them. So I have come to you...
Thanks again.

Greetings!

If possible, try and get a boot log from the player. This will help diagnose if the drives are not being seen. Also, please post the model number of the player. Have you noticed any symptoms before this happened?

Hi
sorry for sounding like a complete moron, but how would I get a boot log?
Model #...nothing on the face, nothing on the back, little white sticker on bottom says. rd100-60
On the back is security hole, power, usb, ethernet serial, line out, and the big plug thingy... anything else I can tell you?

Thanks

Well, if it is coming up with a Rio logo instead of an Empeg logo, it is a Mark2A (unless this was specifically changed by you or a previous owner). As for the boot log, you should connect in with Hyperterminal, watch and save the startup to a capture file and post the contents of that file to the board. If a drive is not being found (a likely cause for the type of error you are seeing) it will be very obvious in that log file.

Things to watch for. On a normal boot, you should see something like this somewhere in your boot log: (You may only have one drive, and it will probably be a different make / model / capacity.)

empeg single channel IDE
Probing primary interface...
hdb: FUJITSU MHU2100AT, ATA DISK drive
hda: FUJITSU MHU2100AT, ATA DISK drive
hdb: FUJITSU MHU2100AT, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x000-0x007,0x038 on irq 6
hda: FUJITSU MHU2100AT, 95396MB w/8192kB Cache, CHS=12161/255/63
hdb: FUJITSU MHU2100AT, 95396MB w/8192kB Cache, CHS=12161/255/63

If, as we suspect, you have a drive problem (typically a bad cable or dry solder joint), you will see something like:

empeg single channel IDE
Probing primary interface...
Probing primary interface...
Probing primary interface...

And will see a "kernel panic" message near the end of your boot log.

If this is the case, you need to take the next steps for troubleshooting a drive problem.

If you really don't want to fuss with it, then you can just ExpressPost it up the 401 to me in Ottawa, and I'll fix it for you. Email me (mlord @ pobox . com) for mailing address and other info.

Cheers

Hmmm... rereading the original problem description, the "second logo" is coming up. I assume that this is the small logo and the player loading screen. If this is the case, it would be finding the disks, but might have a bad kernel / load. It may not be hardware...

True, but I would have expected that to force the player into a reboot loop. We will all know more when we can see a boot log.

Hey mlord....I have a Mark 2a that needs to be repaired....it's been sitting in my closet for close to a year now and I really miss it. If you look at this old post here
What do you make of this, and do you think you can fix it???

Mmm.. no time right now for that one -- ping me again in the dead of winter, though.
