I have noticed somewhere that having the empeg player on face up is bad, I was wondering if someone could confirm/explain why this is so? A installation I am coming up with using batteries would best have the empeg that way but I dont want to do it if it is bad. Thanks!

The answer is in the usual place.

In fact, I think I'm going to update that FAQ entry a tad, based on memory of a recent thread here on the board.

Mostly has to do with how the hard disk shock absorption system was designed to work. If you'll be getting a lot of bumps when it is mounted that way, it may be an issue. Otherwise, it should work fine.

EDIT: yeah...what he said

It puts strain on the spindle in the harddisk(s) in a way that for which they weren't designed.

The Empeg tray is at a slight angle to compensate for the slight angle it would be mounted in a car dash.

Here is a more complete answer:

FAQ entry

Edit: blimey - I'll be taking "quick typist" off my C.V now

All that said, I'm one of the people mentioned in the FAQ as running outside the recommended limits. Roughly 3.5 years now running at roughly 45 degrees with no problems.

I also used to run the empeg out-of-spec (tilted slightly face-down) and did so for many years (4 or so?) with no problems.

What I plan on doing is finding a bag/case of some kind that I can mount the empeg and batteries in and with a sled for wiring it all up so I can listen to it on the go. Most of the time it could be laid down flat but being carried it would be face up. Ill just make sure not to play it much if at all with it face up.

When you do this, make sure it's got room to breathe. Too much heat can kill a hard disk.
