If the builder's not working for you, my page (that you found) is about the only reliable way to do it. Some people have reported success if they run the builder twice.
What size drives are you trying to wipe?

Roger's instructions are the best current complement to the builder for large, modern drives (like the 80G drives). I have successfully used the buillder in conjunction with these instructions on 3 machines with 80G drives. Have you tried the builder followed by these instructions? What size drive are you attempting to build? We need more info or we simply can't help.

Well last night I ended up putting both drives in my laptop and formatting them. Then I put them back in the empeg 1 at a time and installed beta 13 software on both drives.
Now the player boots up perfect but I get a database error when I try to run emplode.
Both drives are Hitachi Travelstar 80gb drives.
Anyone with ideas why I would be getting a database error?

Laptop, as in windows?
Okay. This gets a little tricky. There is nothing here that cannot be fixed, but it might require a little playing around. I suspect that you wiped the drives and (if fdisk was involved) all of the partitions. But, if this is the case, windows would have only created one partition...
Can you get to the command line on the drives? If so, please tell me what you get from the command "fdisk -l /dev/hda" and fdisk -l /dev/hdc". (That is a lower case L...)

What paul is trying to say is...
Formatting the drives on Windows is not correct. The partitions won't be right, and you will get errors if you do that. You have to use the builder image as described in the Drive Upgrade Guide, instead.
When you say you tried to use the builder and it is "not working", can you be more specific about "not working"? Perhaps it's just prompting you to press Enter at the shell prompt, and you haven't done that.

A little history for the others on the board. I know these two 80GB drives - they are the last of the drives from my upgrade. One of the folks at the office (with a player and who asked me to hold two for him) did not respond to my (repeated) emails about the drives. So these were freed up and transferred. Sadly, I forgot to wipe them before shipping. They were a match pair (master / slave), but I think they are beyond that at this point. So I feel kind of responsible for the situation...

P.G.,
Your not responsible at all. I'm using builder now again and this time it appears to be working.
It already built the file systems and mounted the drives. Now its running a bunch of seek, spin up/down tests on the HDs. Do I have to wait through all this testing???

Nope. You should now power down, and flash it with developer.
At this point, re-read Roger's instructions, and follow them: the builder does partly prepare the disk, but not the music partition (at least not properly). If you just leave it the way it is at the moment, the player will appear to start up OK, but will give you all sorts of problems with playlists (doesn't see them, etc). You still haven't said how big your disk is.

Install Developer now or beta 13?

Aha, that's what I thought. Like I said, in the drive upgrade guide, it tells you you gotta press Enter to make it build the drives in that case. That's the only thing you were doing wrong, you just never pressed Enter.
