I got my MK1 from somebody who got new MK2 for cheaper at release of the MK2. And he gave me from the new package MK2 car mount becouse he did not wan't to tear down his car , it works just fine. So I tryed to order MK1 mount from empeg and they don't have anymore. What is the differense between MK2 and MK1 car mounts, is there any? Need one desp... Or just order MK2 car mount and ignore sales people's worries?

The mounting sleds for the Mk1 and Mk2 units are completely different, and are not interchangeable. It would be very difficult (if not impossible) to modify the Mk2 mount to accept the Mk1 chassis. For starters, the docking connector is completely different and mounted in a different location on the sled. The person who sold you the Mk1 is probably making the same discovery right about now. Since he's got to remove that Mk1 mount in order to install his Mk2 anyway, I'll bet you could call him and get the mount from him. ___________ Tony Fabris

And you better hope he removes it gently, MK1 sleds are hard to come by. There are at least 5 people wanting to get their hands on an extra sled.

Is there any alliance between mk1 users? Could the empeg company make a like 100 batch of the old sled if they sold them before they make them ? Or is the make-money-rio thing ruined it for all of us?

Or is the make-money-rio thing ruined it for all of us?I don't think the status of the Mk1 sleds has anything to do with the SonicBlue purchase- it would have been the same thing whether it was Empeg or SonicBlue. They simply didn't make very many extras, and now there aren't any more players being sold, so there's no real point in having them spend money for a new production run on sleds. Remember that it would cost a lot of money to set up the machining and tooling of another sled run. On the bright side, the developer site (link at the top of this BBS page) has the part number and pinouts for the Mk1 docking connector. The rest is just sheet metal. I foresee a future where someone with access to a machine shop will make custom Mk1 sleds for people. Anyone up to it? ___________ Tony Fabris

That's good idea! To make my own sled.. I will check the part and pricing for connector if they are like 1-2£, it should be easy to modify one out of aluminium, or what I WILL do, traw a picture and tell to the race car part maker and ask him to do it out of carbon fiber.

Remember that it's not quite as simple as "drawing a picture" for the machinist. The docking connector has to be aligned almost perfect, and the tolerances for the sled itself are rather slim. You need to make it tight enough to hold the Empeg so it doesn't fall out of the dashboard when you step on the brakes, but loose enough so that it doesn't take a weightlifter to pull it out. Anyone making a custom Mk1 sled would probably need to hang on to the Mk1 itself for a while so that they can do some trial and error work. Although one advantage to having a custom-made sled would be that you could give it the perfect mounting connection points to fit your car. ___________ Tony Fabris

The last thread where we were asking about MK1 sleds never got a response from Rob. We were only asking for 5, I don't know what the minimum batch would have to be. The person you got your player from will have no use for the sled unless he has another MK1 so you should contact him asap.

It also occurs to me that, even if Empeg doesn't have the means with which to do another production run, they do have the exact specifications for the sheet metal piece. So, if they were really nice, they could publish those specs so that someone wanting to make a custom sleds could do it with the exact measurements. ___________ Tony Fabris

I suspect if you're desparate, we can give out the Autocad files for the mk1 sled design - then any metal shop should be able to fabricate it.

Blimey, Hugo! I thought Rob had said that batches would be made up on demand. Has this gone out the window? I am after at least two more of them - surely you could poll for the number of people wantng them, then just get the metalwork done? The connector is easily available from Farnell, and soldering up a harness wouldn't be so awkward - it's just the metal fab, TIG welding and threaded inserts that are the difficult bit. Go on then - and while you're at it, can you mod the drawings to include the Mk 2 sprung side bumps as well? One of the few remaining Mk1 owners... #00015

If you really need a Mk.1 sled please send me an email ( [email protected]) and I'll try to get a feel for the demand. Rob

There are also the issues that we no longer use the manufacturer who made the Mk.1 metalwork, so low volume run-ons are difficult; and the company that made the loom will almost certainly refuse a low volume order (unless we pay an unrealistic price).
Anyway, email me if you need one and I'll see what I can do.

Yeah, batches are one thing - the odd few are a bit harder to accommodate.
It's unfortunate that we have a huge amount of junk Mk.1 metalwork but no car sleds - the take up rate for additional sleds was much higher than we anticipated. We forgot that all Americans have at least two cars!

Tony,
"tight enough to hold the Empeg so it doesn't fall out of the dashboard when you step on the brakes"
I think you should post to the "Strangest places"...mine would fall out if I floored it. Must make watching the visual while driving pretty tough... ;-)
I have _way_ too much time on my hands.

Btw: is anyone from Empeg (or the rest of the BBS) going to be at the embedded linux show in SFO in April?

That would be more than cool. I have a friend in metal shop that uses 4kW laser to cut metal, the laser reads autocad files and just insert metal plate and voila ..

I'd be satisfied with just the metalwork, as buying the connector and soldering up a harness should present no problem. One of the few remaining Mk1 owners... #00015

Ooop - that must make us rather odd with five, then - a TR5, a TR6, two Mini 1000's and a Renault Laguna - and the Loony hs been begging me desperately (you should see the tear-stains on it's sad little face - breaks your heart, it does) to have it's own sled and a new amplifier. I suppect what I'm tryng to say here is I could do with more sleds..... One of the few remaining Mk1 owners... #00015

I will check the part and pricing for connector if they are like 1-2£,...I am afraid your estimate of 1-2£ is not in the ballpark -- heck, it's not even in the same game. You can find more about these extraordinarily expensive connectors here but you'll have to wade through quite a few posts to put it all together. Suffice it to day, that is about a $60 connector, about 40--50 times more expensive than you had hoped. Sorry if I ruined your day... :-( tanstaafl. "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch"

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I was wondering if this was ever resolved. I never owned an MK1, but the place I work at has a metal shop and I'm assuming can read an autocad file and make the sleds. If you can, send the file to me or attach it to this thread. I will see what I can do. Also, an estimation of the demand would be appreciated.
