I've been looking into a Tivo based DVR/DVD burner combo unit. I've found the Toshiba RS-TX60 and it's sibling RS-TX20 - at 160GB and 120GB respectively. There also seems to be a similar one from Humax, DRT800.

It seems like a nice way to use Tivo, and save the shows I want to watch again. At this point (and for the likely future), I have old fashioned cable. No digital cable or satellite, so no DirectTivo, and cable supplied DVR isn't available.

Has anyone had any experience with these? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The Pioneer is nice. Being able to edit out commercials would be better.

I saw references to the Pioneer units, but couldn't find active listings for them on their site. Someone from weaknees told me they'd been discontinued.

My dad wants one of these things, so I did a bunch of research on this a month ago. The Pioneer seems to have serious quality control issues. Lots of people grumbling about malfunctioning machines. The new Toshiba and Humax are, well, new, so there's no solid data on them yet.

I saw lots of complaints about the Pioneer, notably video quality at anything other than "best". I cannot corroborate those.

I thought video quality on any stand-alone at anything other than best was less than stellar on all units (ie. including the SD ones around now for years).

I have a VERY old series 1 unit with drive upgraded to 80gb, and turbonet card for updates.. I have my set to high by default, on my 32" standard tube (good quality panasonic pure-flat TV) things look just fine.. I'm sure if I had HDTV, or a larger screen (neither of which I can see myself getting within the next 5 years) I might see some issues with high.

From what I've read, the Series 1 Tivos had much better, but more expensive, chipsets.
