I'm already using Gallery for my own web site. All is well.

Now for a friend who wants to host thumbnailed galleries but can't install server-side software such as Gallery...

I'm looking for a program that will create galleries with HTML pages and thumbnails in the same style as Gallery, but do it all local on the hard disk, at which point you would upload its created collection to an existing web site.

Requirements:

- Runs under Windows.
- Is free or has a non-limited free option.
- Creates fully built web pages that you merely upload to the web site along with the JPGs.
- In addition to creating thumbnails, it also needs to be able to size the base "big" images to a manageable screen-friendly size such as 640x480. So that way you get the thumbs, and then click on a thumb to get 640x480.

I've tried Easy Thumbnails but it fails on the last requirement.

edit: Just tried "Photonizer 2003" and its user interface was obtuse, its resulting HTML looked lousy, and it still failed the fourth requirement.

Anyone know of anything?

Gallery supports a offline mode which will let you generate HTML. Your friend will need a local server to run it though.

I tried 12345 Good Photo Gallery Wizard just now, and it looks like it's The Business, it seems to do exactly what I need it to do. The only thing that worries me is that it says it needs to be registered. But the program they offer for download isn't pestering me for registration. I don't know if that's going to be something it decides to do in the future or what.

jAlbum meets all your criteria. Java, slowish, many templates (repository here), rather easy to customize.

I was going to suggest Galleroo but your find looks better. Thanks yet again for a handy reference!

By the by, might you happen to have a reference to a freeware application for buring ISO images to CD's?

And as a corralary question, what about an application that would "host" a set of ISO images--ideally one that kids could navigate? I'm wanting to make clean install for my kids and would rather have them choosing icons than flipping CD's around and trying to get the discs in/out of the drive tray w/o scratching. Any suggestions?

Irfanview can generate simple but effective HTML thumbnail galleries. 100% free, and also the only image viewer/minor editor that my Windows boxes see.

Wow. Sorry to say this, but that is the worst case I've seen of a difference in rendering between IE and Firefox. I mean, wow, that's completely different.

*edit*
Ah, when the IE version finished loading, I see now that it's a very Microsoft approach. Interesting, but I'd want something more cross-platform.

I'm not sure what you mean? Are you talking about the look and feel? That's just what I chose. Or are you saying it doesn't work properly on Firefox?

Doesn't look right at all in Firefox. The images are all in a vertical line down the middle of the page. Firefox is in standard compliance mode and isn't in quirks mode because of the DTD line at the top which is probably why it's rendering it different.

That's just one of many (easily customizable) templates - for example, this my unfinished site hastily cobbled together to show friends back home scenes from Paris poses no problems to FireFox.

I hadn't thought to check out Irfanview! I should have. Shame on me.

Memory is telling me something called "CDRWin" or something like that, but I don't have a link handy.

Donato, that "Web Album Generator" you just linked is definitely The Business, better than the one I linked earlier. That's a keeper.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions and links. This BBS is great.
