I have a computer that is running Windows XP Pro and lately when I close the window after looking at a picture, my computer says 'Runtime error 216 at 00002F98.' I close that window and then it says 'Runtime error 216 at 000053B2'.Everytime I try to close that window, it comes up again and I have to reset the computer. Any idea on what might be causing this? It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often.

Thsi looks like a runtime error code from one of the versions of Visual Basic. I would suspect that the program you are using to view pictures with is written with VB. In that case, the simplest solution is to uninstall, then re-install, the package.

except that it is the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer that comes builit into Win XP. I just hope it isn't a virus (i was looking on the net and saw that there are similar characteristics to this one virus.)

First thing that came to mind was that it might be SubSeven/Sub7.

Also, see here.

I did a scan with my anti-virus software (AVG) and it didn't find a virus. Is there any other good anti-virus software that has a trial edition (or is free) that you would suggest is pretty thorough? or any ideas on what else it might be?

Trendmicro has a nice on-line scanner that finds some that Norton misses.

Ok...i ran that program and it came up with a bunch of viruses so I got rid of those, but it is still doing it. Any other suggestions? (by the way, the viruses were mostly java based. I tried deleting that and it seemed to work fine, but it was a problem that was erratic anyway. So, I reinstalled java and it still does it. However, it is not showing any viruses on my computer so I don' t know if the two are related problems or not.)

Most likely the virus infections have damaged your operating system and you'll probably need to reinstall Windows at this point.

While I admire your persistance in sticking with this problem for at least a month, I'd have to agree with Tony. If you're irritated enough with your OS, and you've asked the very intelligent people here for their advice, and it still doesn't work, then it's time to have that "fresh, clean feeling" of a new install. It's nice, you should try it

And next time, may I suggest AVG Antivirus from Grisoft? It's free, with free updates, and the new free version is quite good.

That is originally what he scanned it with.

Ah, I see. Sorry about that, I haven't been keeping track well. I still need to figure out how to work a full-time job and keep up with the other full-time job of checking the empeg boards

Still, I'm willing to bet the version he used was version 6, which was not doing very well at all while version 7 was being released for free. I installed it on several machines where the active virus checker would find a virus and tell you to run the scan, then the scan wouldn't find anything. Not good. Then I downloaded version 7, and noticed you could delete when notified of a virus. A little late for an important addition, but still excellent.

Who knows, maybe if you try version 7 now it'll find some more viruses.
