Well, I'm now the proud owner of 3 Empegs - two MkII's and a MkI Now, some might say that was greedy (and I'd be one of them) but I do have two cars and that's the only excuse I can think of

Anyway, on to the query. I now need to load my 56GB of music onto the MkI. Even with USB, this is going to take a few days and be very VERY boring! So, I was thinking - if I put the disk into the MkII and blew a MkI image onto it, could I then transfer the data over the Ethernet connection? I'm guessing that the MkI image doesn't have drivers for the Ethernet, so I expect the answer is "no", but if you don't ask.....

You ought to be able build the disk in the mk2, with the mk2 image. Then you can load the content.

When you're done, just put the disk back in the mk1, and put the mk1 image on it using the upgrader.

It ought to work, but I suggest trying it with a small amount of music first, to make sure.

Ah, I wasn't sure if the image affected the data (haven't had cause to overwrite one without wiping the other yet )

Another thing you can do is directly copy the music files that already exist on the disk of one of your empegs. No need to do a music-load if one of your empegs is already loaded with music.

Instructions on how to do a drive-to-drive copy are in the disk upgrade guide. Essentially, you just copy the contents of the drive0/fids folder, put the disks back in the proper players, and synch once to force a database rebuild.

One minor problem with this is going to be the size of the dynamic database - at 56G, it will take a while to start the machine up and will leave very little memory left for caching. The disk(s) will be spinning the whole time.

Yeah, he's got a point. Your mark1 has a lot less RAM than those mark2's, and the sheer number of songs in a 56-gig collection will overwhelm the RAM of that mark1 player. The entire list of song tag information is stored in RAM on the player for fast indexing, you see, and too many tunes can cause problems.

OTOH, as has been pointed out in other threads, the Mk1 is easy to upgrade to 16MB, as the pads for the chips & decoupling are already there...

Ah, ok - thanks guys. I did wonder why people favoured the MkII's.
I'll leave the memory upgrade for the moment and focus on getting both MkII's set up with music. After that, I'll get the MkI going, for tuner stuff
