So, I'm trying to get my father the LOTR trilogy box set. The problem? There are way too many box sets to choose from! What the hell? I can't seem to find the best one. There's some "Platinum" edition on Amazon, but it's cheaper than one that seems to be the non-extended movies.

Does anyone know what I should look for?

If you're looking for the extended versions of all three movies in a single box set, it looks like you'll need the The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Special Extended DVD Edition) . I have the Platinum Series Special Extended Edition of all three movies, but I purchased them seperately.

I'm pretty sure there's still only two cuts of each film -- cinema and extended. Any other differences between sets will be in the extras.

AFIK, there are three editions of each movie: Platinum Series Special Extended Edition, Platinum Series Special Extended Edition Collector's Gift Set, Widescreen Edition, and Full Screen Edition. The latter two are just the movie as shown in theaters with no particualr extras. The Platinum Series is the extended versions of the movies with a buch of extras. The Gift Sets are the Platinum Series plus a little statue, basically. IMO, you want the Platinum series, non-gift set. There's also a box that contains that version of all three movies that Amazon lists as "The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Special Extended DVD Edition)". That's probably what you want. (Edit: which is exactly what Cybjorg said half an hour ago.)

just don't buy them from buy.com
I preordered my ROTK Platinum back in Oct. Then they updated my order on 12/9 to "Shipped, USPS has been notified"
Which is where it has been ever since.
Customer Service wants me to wait thirteen days before tagging it as unshipped.

Buy.com really seems to have gone down the toilet recently and its not just christmas....

Wow! I had completely missed that the last movie came out in special edition. I've been waiting for the super-trilogy pack to come out before buying ANY of the movies. I've been waiting sooooo long. I must have this. Now.

As an aside, the Amazon review starts with the line:
Quote:
The extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings present the greatest trilogy in film history
What an audacious claim, especially given that SW was just released. It also happens to be a valid claim, IMO.

Well, at least we can be thankful that Jackson did not wait twenty some years before releasing it on DVD, as some turd monkey did..... I mean George is a great movie maker and all, but come on...twenty years?!?!?

They had DVDs twenty years ago?

The first Star Wars Trilogy was released on Laserdisc twice from what I have come up with. And several times on VHS between the different editions released.

More than twice on LD. IIRC, there were at least two releases of the original movies onto individual LDs, there was a CAV collector's edition (which I own), and then a release of the special editions. I may be wrong about the two releases of the original movies, though. But at least three.
