Hello Fellow Empeg'ers

I have filled up my 36 gig drive and I still have more to ripping to do, I want to install a 2nd hard drive in my MK II player. Is there any particular Hard Drive Manuf I should look for or stay away from. I also noticed that Empeg don't carry the 36gig'er at the online store, is there another source for a 36gig hard drive. Oh me oh my 72 gigs online (WOW)

If you're empeg is a 36 GB model, you already have 2 drives in it. Two 18 Gigers to be exact. The largest laptop (2.5") Drives that i've seen around are the 30 Gig IBM drives that are selling for around $450. From other posts on the board, I seem to remember the Empeg guys recommending Toshiba drives, but there's no reason any other drives won't work as long as the meet the height requirements to fit onto the shockmount.

Can someone validate his statement, How can I check without removing the cover and voiding my warranty to see if I have 1 or 2 drives installed in my unit. I'm sure hoping that I got only 1 drive in here and not 2.

You should be able to tell by looking through the ventilation holes atop the unit.

Oh, nope. Scratch that. That was the case for the Mark1's, but on my Mark2, the longer IDE cable covers my view of the drives. Darn.

Anyway, to be sure, you can watch the unit boot with hyperterminal and see how many disk drives it detects.

I'm surprised, though: You have a 36gb model? And you're still wanting more drive space? Wow. Must be some MP3 collection!

"This model uses both drive bays."
-quoted from empeg.com on the 40 gig model (which used to be the 36 gig model until empeg got 20 gig hard drives in quantity, at which point they bumped it up to the 40 gig)

The 6gig uses one 6gig drive. The 12gig uses one 12 gig drive. The 20gig uses one 20gig drive (used to be 18gig using one 18), and the 40 gig uses two 20 gig drives (used to be 36 gig using two 18's, which is what you have).

Yeah, if you've got the 36GB model then you're up a crick. I'd say your best bet is to sell one or both of those 18GB drives to needy Empegers who have extra drive bays (like myself) and get one or two 30GB Travelstar drives. Last I saw they were a bit over $400 USD. I'm sure you're aware this voids your warranty and many people recommend getting drives mounted by Empeg, but then again, Empeg isn't offering 30GB upgrades just yet.

If your lucky as in my Mk2 you can see down through the speaker looking vent holes on the top, my HDD cable doesn't cover it completely. Yup I've got one drive space available.
I agrree, already filled a 36 gigger, must have one helluva collection or high bitrated long classical music.

If you have 36Gb, you have both bays filled. We have never shipped a single drive bigger than 20Gb so far, and in any case the *largest* 2.5" hard disk even announced by anyone is 32Gb.
