Does anybody know how usergroups work in phpBB? We've tried it a couple of times but can't make them work.

What we're after is a way to have a section of the board visible only to members of a specific usergroup. We have a version of this by having "hidden" boards but these are visible to all mods (and invisible to non-mods)

Hope the above makes sense

Any ideas?

When I get some time, I'll look through my forum admin and see how I did it. It's been a while (about 3 years), so I don't remember off the top of my head, and I took a quick glance at the admin page, but it's looking very confusing at the moment.

Work is very busy now, but will slow down later today. If nobody has responded I'll help out later.

Its possible but I forget how - just some tinkering with the permissions of users in the groups. I'll have a look and see....

Have you tried creating a new group and adding members you want to have full access? Then change all the permissions of the single forum/category to "no access" for the people who won't be allowed to see it? And the same for the new group - but they get full access? If that makes sense? :S

I think I'm beginning to understand my problem:

Quote:
4.4.2: Moderating a Group

For each group, there is one Group Moderator. The group moderator may control membership to the group by adding and removing members. They may also control the Group Type. The group moderator is specified in the admin panel. For more information, see 3.3 Group Administration.
4.4.2.1: Adding Members

To add members to a group, go to the Group Control Panel. In the lower right corner, there is a text field. Enter the username to add, and click Add Member. Additionally, you may use Find a username if you are not sure of the name of the user to add.

Our admin panel doesn't have a Group Control Panel, just....

Group Admin
Management
Permissions

???

The search function doesn't function when it's functioning...if you get what I mean. Trying to get help on that board is like pulling teeth. You can post a question on the support forum, and it'll be on page 3 in less than a day and have no replies.

I've done my investigation and will post instructions in a couple of minutes.

Here's what you do:

-Go the main admin page.
-Forum Admin > Management > Create new forum (just like normal) > Submit
-Forum Admin > Permissions > Choose the new forum > advanced> make everything "PRIVATE" > Submit
-Group Admin > Management > Create new group (this is pretty straight forward. make the group hidden). Submit
-Group Admin > Permissions > select the group > give the group access to the folder

To add users, go out of the admin page, and click on "Usergroups" at the top of your forum. You should be a member of the group since you're an admin, so click on "View Information" for that group. At the bottom of that page there should be a text box for you to add usernames.

I believe that's all there is to it.

It looks like site admins can access my hidden forum even though they're not group members and haven't been given permissions on it.

Actually thinking about it we had way too many admins so we're going to reduce the number of admins which'll resolve the issue.

I'd email tech support. I've always found them to be really useful. Also have you been to http://www.threadsdev.com ? Its great - lots of mods sections and downloads that make things possible that the original soffware won't allow. I've have a post/search on there.

It's actually doing what we need now (thanks Dignan), just need to reduce the number of admins now.

Didn't think of mailing tech support, I just knew it wan't worth posting on the forum (done it before)

Thanks for that link, I'll take a look.

Good, I'm glad that worked. How many users do you have? To have so many admins and moderators it must be pretty large. Besides, moderators can be given such custom permissions, that you really don't need many admins at all. I suspect if I had a very large community, I'd still only have myself as an admin.

Another site that I use from time to time is phpbbhacks.com. But the forum there is sort of the opposite of phpbb.com. It seems like nobody posts there.

Thats normal. Since Admin is the highest ranking, it is impossible to create something that an admin cannot see. Normally a board of any size only has a few admins, and then people set to moderator to allow post control, but not board control. It's done the same way with this board, and any other software I have worked with as well.

Exactly. I believe that in phpBB, the only difference between admins and moderators with maximum privileges is that the moderators can't access the control panel.

Thanks again guys, once I realised that we had too many admins (and how to add members to a hidden group, thanks Dignan) we managed to achieve what we were after. We're phpBB novices and the phpBB boards aren't exactly useful for getting a sensible reply.

That's what i like about this place, so many intelligent people, got to be the most intelligent board I frequent.

I remembered something else today. I'd recommend creating a second username for yourself. That way any time you wanted to test something to do with user permissions, you could use your second test name, given whatever permissions you want to test, and see if your settings work.

I'm glad you've got things working now. People talk badly about it, but I like phpBB.

Yup I created a dummy user just to make sure that things were working how I expected them to. Many thanks for your help.

You know something... I COMPLETELY misread your first post and only just realised! I read it as you wanting help with UBBThreads. What an idiot! Sorry
