Hi,

I pulled the existing two disks (a 10gb and 18GB) out of my Mark II and replaced it with a single Hitachi 80GN unit. I did the exact same process with my Mk2a and had no problems.

Anyway, I build the Mk II with the disk builder image and ran the stress test all night. I then applied version 2.0 end-user. When I ran Emplode to put my music back, emplode crashs with an error after it restarts the player - during the initial read process. I can't get emplode to start.

So I re-image using the disk builder again - and applied the developer image so I could get to the shell prompt and poke around.

A quick examination of the boot log shows that I might have a partition or filesystem error, but my UNIX days are long behind me and I can't figure it out.

Here is the boot log:

That looks very... um .. yucky.

My guess is that the Mk2 has less RAM and the builder isn't working on it. PaulG, the "Big Drive Guy" has had trouble installing large drives in his Mk2 that I have had no problems doing in my Mk2a.

So... you can either build the drives manually (a search should pop up link on that) or, build the drive and install 2.0final developer using the Mk2a and then transfer the drive to the Mk2.

There are also some tools around here to keep the two players in sync. Or you can even use Jemplode to copy from one empeg to another.

I agree about rebuilding the drive manually. There is also a bug in the builder that occasionally causes trouble.

Ah, That would explain it then. Looks like a manual build then as the mk2a is all back together and I hate taking them apart...

Thanks for the eyeball on the problem.

That bootlog has been hopelessly mangled, probably by Hyperterminal. Could you get hold of Teraterm, or some other working comms program, and try again?

Or just do direct logging, rather than a copy-and-paste. The mangling happens in the Windows XP version of hypeterminal when you do a copy-and-paste. If you do a direct log to disk, the mangling doesn't happen.

Well I rw and rwm'd the empeg.

mke2fs -m0 /dev/hda4

ro
rom

reboot, quit to shell

rw
rwm
cd /drive0
mkdir fids
mkdir var
created a 0 byte config.ini in /drive0/var

ro
rom

and reboot. Less errors this time and emplode didn't die when it re-mounted the disks. Weirdly enough, there is a less space available with nothing on the player than what my Mk2a reported, 72GB vs. 75GB with the single 80GB drive but it seems to be syncronizing now.

The link to Rodgers page with the instructions for manually building the drives are broken, or his site is down. I haven't found explicit instructions for building drives anywhere, so I muddled through with what I could find.

I'll let everyone know if this syncronization works tomorrow night as I'm uploading 40MB of stuff at the moment.

Cheers,

Clarke

If the partitions on the drives weren't built correctly, you'll lose all your music the next time you run an .upgrade file. So be sure the drives were built correctly before synching music.

Tony,

I've got no way of knowing how to build the drives correctly. It's not in your FAQ oh, FAQ-master! :-) (at least not that I've been able to find). A search of the BBS for mke2fs (used to format the partitions) shows a limited number of results and no specific directions. I figured out enough from what I could find to make it work, but apparently the link to Rodgers instructions doesn't work as the site is down.

Any suggestions on where to find the step-by-step instructions for drive building by hand? I supposed I could pull the Mk2a apart again and move the drive over to that to be built - but I cringe everytime I open the case of my empegs. I might have three, but they are irreplacable.

Cheers,

Clarke

Yeah, the hand-building instructions were at Roger's site. Hope it comes up again soon!

In the meantime, I'd just say run the builder image, like it says in the disk upgrade guide (remembering to press enter on the "disk appears to be already built" prompt, just like it says). There has been talk that sometimes running the builder image twice in a row works for larger disks. Not sure why or if that's even true.

WHAT WE NEED IS A NEW BUILDER IMAGE.
