It probably means your hard disk has one of these problems.

Sooo, I had originally got 4 cd's on the Rio MK2 before I got this error, so I tried the 5th one and got the error, then I deleted on of the other cd's an reloaded a different disc and it worked, so I cannot download more than 4 cd's cause it freezes with that error shown on the Rio screen. What do you think, bad hard drive maybe.

Read the link that Tony (tfabris) pointed out for you. Lots of possible things, but 9/10 times the unit requires resoldering of the "IDE header" -- a fragile gizmo on the mainboard.
Easy fix for a qualified repair person.

I was pretty sure that I had checked that when I checked the IDE cable, but I will take it apart and wiggle it a bit and take a closer look. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

You most likely will not be able to see the possible damage to an IDE header. I could not see mine, and the person that fixed it could not promise that it was in fact damaged (you need really high magnification I guess), but after he (Mark Lord) touched up the solder connections, the player has run flawlessly since.
This is not a DIY type problem - seek someone who has experience.
However, please understand, I'm not diagnosing your player. The IDE head may in fact be okay. I just don't want you to assume it's okay by just wiggling the cord.

Nope that is not it, they are all on there securely, I can't even move the IDE connector at all it is tight, and everything else looks good, I had mentioned in another thread that I can download music no problem, but only 4 cds or 200MB worth, I can delete it and reload different stuff whenever I want, but when it exceeds about 200 or so MB then I get that error msg on thr RIO screen. All the connectors are securely sautered down. Nothing looks like anything in the picture as far as loose connectors.

If you want to test the drive(s) you could get an External USB 2.0 drive enclosure connect it to a windows machine format it and try putting data on it. This would require the disks the be rebuilt when your done testing them. Maybe someone else knows of a way to test the drive using dd on the empeg (is there a version dd for the empeg?).

All I can think of is that there is an error in the drive, a budy of mine who has had Rio for awhile is going to come check it out, so we'll see after that, but it is frustrating, I can do some music perfectly then it just goes to hell with that stupid error. Anyway, thanks for the help, keep it all coming.

Hook up the serial cable, connect to your player using kermit or hyperterm or something, and then hit control^C to stop the player app.
Now, do this: cat /dev/hda > /dev/null
And wait for error messages. Post the error messages here.

Here you go, does it make any sense to you? Is it really bad??

Um, yes. This seems to show a hardware fault - either a bad (loose) cable, header or dying drive.

So I have tried the IDE cable at all ends, it seems fine, plus I can download about 4 cd's no problem, it is the 5th one that brings the errors. Also I have taken a really close look at the connectors where they are soldered and everything but there isn't anything at all that would even remotely make me think that the header is faulty. So I guess I need a new hard drive then??

Those are bad sectors on the disk.. "hard errors". Time to replace the drive.
You *might* be able to salvage it by overwriting the bad sectors, giving the onboard sector-remapping logic a chance to swap in some good sectors in place of the bad for future use. Doing this will require wiping the drive clean and starting over from scratch:
cat /dev/zero > /dev/hda
(wait many hours for it to eventually complete with an "error" indicating it hit the end of the drive).

Applying the builder upgrade, then the standard 2.0 final developer release. Go to the drive upgrade guide and start at step 6.

No, not done. That just means it failed. Try it again and hope the drive smartens up. If not, toss it and try a new drive.

There is quite abit a of those errors on different sectors, is this drive a lost cause you figure, or what do you think?? If so when I need to format my new drive, where do I find the DISK BUILDER SOFTWARE and the appropriate .ht file.

So far, all of the errors you've been willing to tell us about have all been near to each other on the disk, indicating a scratch on the platter. Toast.
The builder software is at the "Latest Software" link above (imagine that).

The FAQ entry on how to use Hyperterminal is here. When you create a profile for connecting to the player, the resulting file extension is .ht.

Well I wiped everything and reloaded everything and things semm alright right now, it is all loading up pretty good, so, I may not have to replace the drive.
I spoke to soon, it sounds like crap in the car, well, I guess it sounds ok but it is very choppy, and seems to "skip"alot, this goes back to the original problem of a bad disk drive I assume??
