serial # 090001019 dead HDD inside! (well, every now and again will boot up)
I just pulled my empeg from my car after a few years of good use. The HDD is dying, so needs to be replaced. If I don't get any good offers for it, I'll put a replacement drive in there and eBay it.
Comes with the dock, serial cable, usb cable, remote control, a bunch of Darkstorm fascia. No box or manual.
US buyers only!

I ended up reading through the FAQ and it turns out the hard drives are fine. I pulled them out and did a stress test. I ended up reseating the IDE cable and voila! the unit works just fine now. It has 2x 20gb HDD in it. I loaded up the 2.0 firmware, and the lastest Hijack kernel. I've put it up on ebay:

Johnno, if you're interested, I could meet you at the border with it.

Hey Brad
Thank you for the offer.
Actually I wasn't interested in making the purchase, I was just expressing my disdain for the restriction imposed on us non-US residents....It's one of my BIG pet peeves with certain US eBay sellers as well...filling out that customs form isn't really that hard now is it?

It's not, but I had more trouble shipping my player to Mark Lord for repair than I did to the UK for another repair. Very frustrating when the Canadian border is closer to me than the mall.
If you come across an eBay auction, let me know.

Maybe you should have taken it to a post office in Canada and mailed it from there.

Oh, I guess I'll ship out of the states as long as the buyer pays for shipping. I just instinctly put that restriction in place because I don't want to deal with the hassle of shipping oversees on not so valuable stuff like old cameras, cell phones, electronics. Quote: Hey Brad

That thought crossed my mind, and I didn't realize how much easier it would have been!

No, Brad's trouble was not shipping the player to Canada, but the fact that we knew in advance we wanted it to be shipped BACK to the USA afterwards. That's the troublesome part, not the shipping out of the USA.
Besides, all his troubles would not have happened if he'd simply filled out the customs label with a low value as requested, instead of labelling it as a very valuable item subject to duty/taxes. But again, for one-way shipments, even that part is trivial for the sender.
Cheers

Mark, for the record, I did fill out the lable with a low value. You and I were never able to figure out how the figure on there was so high and I remember you noticing that it looked like it wasn't writen at the same time the rest of the lable was filled out. I also marked it "car stereo" and IIRC the lable said "computer part" or something, so I believe someone poked their nose in it. What really messed it up was when I missed the package on its way back and the USPS left no note on my door. They in turn shipped it BACK to Mark in Canada and we got to enjoy the process all over again! Mark was really understanding about it all and thankfully it got resolved. I think the whole thing was a fluke though. I wouldn't hesitate to ship to Canada again. I just offered to drive it across the border for the chance of a little spin in my car.

Hey Guys
Just my two cents...and the following applies to Canada only...
First of all, there should have been no taxes assessed on Brad's player if the player was being shipped to Canada for repair only. Taxes usually only apply on a item purchased outside of your home country and then imported. Taxes may be assessed on a repair service as well if the cost of the service was a high amount. In any case taxes are assessed on the value of the item / service only. The best way to deal with this kind of situation is to clearly mark the shipment as a repair return containing used items destined to be returned to the original owner...
If the item is undervalued and it is deemed purposely so, then an assessment of the current fair market value of the item is made and taxes paid on that amount. An additional monetary penalty may also be applied if the case is deemed serious enough.
Duty in this case would not apply because the player was manufactured in a MFN (most favoured nation) tarriff country and imported into the US. The duty was paid when the player was originally imported in the US. There is no duty on computer equipment crossing between Canada/US due to NAFTA.
Brad, you can appeal/contest the tax assessed on the shipment if you're interested, do you still have the customs documents?...let me know and I'll send you the paperwork you would need to proceed with an appeal....

Mark was kind and patient enough to do this for me. He PayPal'd me back the return. Thanks for the offer though! I think it was just a one time thing..

YEah, like Brad said, we eventually got the tax refunded. Somebody must have doctored the paperwork, though, which is worrying for a country like Canada.
I regularly receive goods with mis-applied taxes from the border crossing, and have to do the paperwork to get it refunded again. Four times in a row now, all since CPC farmed it out to Purolator Global or whatever they're called. They have a deliberate incentive to mis-apply duty/taxes now, since they get to tack on C$8 every time they do it, and they get to keep their (my!) $8 every time regardless.
Slimey bastards.

Ack! Sorry for the bad/ambiguous English. I was trying to distinguish btw the very valuable empeg and the not so rare stuff that I typically sell or buy on eBay.

Just received my empeg from mdinh. Looks like it was still having cable issues, so after a little troubleshooting I ordered one from Eutronix. When I let mdinh know about it, he even compensated me for it.
What more can ya ask.
