IBM has been shipping 32gig drives for quite a while now. Specs :

Yeah, that's what i was wondering... why is it news that Toshiba is releasing 30 gig models since IBM's been making them for some time.

The Toshiba ones only have 2 platters, compaired to the 4 the IBM 32 uses. Less platters usually means cheaper prices, and the ability to maufacture more drives. So it should mean the 60gb players would be feasable for empeg to use, and possible even price it near the 40gb model now.

We announced at CES that the maximum capacity Rio Car player will be 60Gb, using IBM drives.

Ahhh... okay, that makes sense i guess. It'd be damn nice if they were cheaper. The IBM's are at around $400 retail. Damn... to wait or not to wait... argh.

Rob, will the 60 GB model be at the same pricepoint as the 40 is now?

Prices haven't been announced yet, but hopefully the Rio branded product will be ready soon.

We expect that the empeg site will continue to provide a greater depth of information than that given by the main riohome site. The site will effectively be the Rio Car site, but will continue to live at www.empeg.com (not least because I feel disinclined to pay anything to the cybersquatter who got riocar.com several months ago).

Hopefully this will please everyone - glossy marketing site and store at riohome.com and in-depth information at empeg.com. Of course the BBS will continue to be independent - Rio love this thing!

Sure - cost free tech support. And very good support at that!! Thanks everybody. I cant think of any other techie toy I own that has created such a virtual community and online conversation.

I was actually lucky to find a second one. There's a BBS called the "Home Theater Spot" whose clientele are of a similar caliber to the ones found here. I'm occasionally involved in their section regarding Mitsubishi big-screen televisions. The down side is that the Mits folk don't participate in that BBS.

As an example of the high quality of that BBS:

There's a problem with certain models of Mits TV sets that results in two faint artifacts appearing on the screen, commonly known as "raster ringing" and "wavy lines". Mitsubishi has tried sending their techs out to apply multiple different fixes to customer's sets, and only resulted in a reduction of the problem, not a complete solution.

A couple of the BBS users figured out a proper fix for the problem. Turns out it was a simple ground loop in the wiring, and the fix literally was to unplug some ground wires and connect them to a different ground wire. The fix is so simple that Gomer Pyle could do it in ten minutes.

Anyway, I think it's neat that the Web, combined with BBS software, has enabled user communities like these. Once upon a time, you had to dial up a BBS directly with your modem, making most BBS's a very local phenomenon. Now this information can be shared all over the world, but without the S/N problems of Usenet. I think it's great.

I don’t know how you could market this BBS as a feature – but it is certainly a big selling point and a huge benefit to the owners. I know there are a couple non-owners floating around here (probably more back when there was a queue), but this BBS is where I point any one of my friends (or potential empeger) when they have questions…It’s a greatly appreciated resource. Thanks again to everyone!!

Definitely. If it weren't for this BBS, i'd still probably be "on the fence" about buying an empeg. Having this resource and all the support of fellow users and ESPECIALLY the actual designers of the product is what sold me and made the $1300 price tag seem like less of a shock.

Speaking of the "Empeg Collective", did you ever get that toggle switch for the headlight sense-line ??

It works well in my car, but with my tinted windows it is not really noticeable from the outside at night.(But the bass sensitive neon tubes sure are!) Those tubes are cool, for about 10 minutes, then they get rather "ricey" real quick! Not too sure why I bought them, but needless to say, they will not make the migration to the new car.
