I'm writing this on my pocket pc, trying to set it up for good mobile usage. One thing that has eluded me is how I should set up mobile email. I want to avoid using webmail on such a small device, as it is pretty clunky. Gmail through the built-in email client is not great either. I would love to be able to receive and send email via my own domain's email account.

It's easy enough to receive email, but how do I send it? When at home, I can use my ISP's smtp server. Is there a catch-all solution for me? I've never had to worry about this before, so I don't know much about it.

If you have control over your mail server, look into using authenticated/encrypted SMTP. It will depend on what the device supports, so check that first before investigating anything.

My domain allows anyone anywhere to send mail as long as you use TLS encryption and log in as a user on the box.

Thanks. So you think my best bet would be to call my web host? I'm not sure what the email program on my Axim supports, but it would probably be capable of what you're talking about.

I send and recieve email from 2 email accounts (POP3). When sending I use the same SMTP server as I do on the PC. Exactly the same settings. On Windows Mobile 2003 in the 'messages' program it works like a charm.

I assume your pocket PC has some sort of web browser on it? If so use http://www.e-mol.com

That's a cool service. But as stated, I'm not looking for a webmail solution. I already have webmail for my own domain, and it and GMail (HTML version only) work pretty well considering the size and interface of the device. But still, these services were designed for computers with larger screens and keyboard/mouse inputs. Maybe once I've saved up for the keyboard and mouse I want for this thing, I'll be more willing to use webmail. But still, I prefer email clients that were built for a mobile device. Pockout Outlook is pretty bad but it's designed for use on a PDA. Besides, there's some other clients out there that look pretty nice, although I don't feel like paying for one at the moment.

Oh, and if anyone has a Pocket PC and wants the link for the very early version of Minimo, let me know.

Is your PDA connecting via a cell provider? Most of them run SMTP servers; you just have to get the details from them. Who's your provider?

We have a bunch of people pulling email from our IMAP gateway, and sending via the cell phone company's SMTP.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking for a solution that was completely independant of how I was connecting to the internet, whether through my phone, wireless, or in the docking station. I contacted my web host, and they gave me the address to a server that they will allow me to use. I'll just have to enter credentials each time I send email. But soon they'll be moving me to new servers that will not need that.
