Hello All

Just finished ripping 2 GB of .wma tunes in prep for the arrival of my empeg...I had thought when they were ripped, I was doing them at 160 kb but in reality, they were encoded at 96 kb!. I did a test of a song with decent earphones and the dreaded artifacts were there. Is anyone out there familiar with any bugs with MusicMatch that would cause this? I checked the settings a number of times and it was always set at 160kb...the status display also indicated encoding at 160kb, I don't get it....John

I know nothing about MusicMatch, so these are just wild shots in the dark...

1) Is it a shareware-demo version of MusicMatch that only allows low-bitrate recording? Perhaps you need to upgrade the software to a retail version before it'll do high quality?

2) Perhaps it uses the Windows built-in CODECs to do the encoding, and you've only got an older version of the WMA codec installed? Check the online help for MusicMatch and see if there's anything about Windows CODECs in there.

3) Are you selecting an option somewhere which says "do my ripping as fast as possible" or "do my ripping in real time" or "encode the files as they're being ripped"? It's possible that such options would throttle the quality level of the encoder so that it can get the job done. If that's the case, then tell the program to rip the wavs to the hard disk first then encode them later at higher quality.

Like I said, these are stabs in the dark and might not be related to your problem.

DUH!!!
Thanks Tony, I never concidered the codecs issue! I have all the proper settings and the encoding works as it should when doing MP3 at custom settings...Trouble is, I am using an office computer (I am trapped in Bosnia after all) and guess what? It is still running Win95...I guess I will have to go hunting for some newer codecs now and try again. Forgot to mention that I am running the upgraded version of MM v5. God bless Bosnian copyright law (or the lack thereof ha ha) John
