I am suggesting that instead of having to select from (a very limited) range of cities when setting the timezone, using a time relative to GMT (eg: GMT +9.5hrs or GMT -2.5hrs, etc.) which would make it possible to cover every location on the planet.

It already has those (under the "Etc" heading), as part of the 1533 pre-defined timezones. Hardly limited, one would think!

EDIT: Well, okay, it doesn't have half-hour GMT increments, just the full hour increments. But Newfies and others on half-hour offsets can just find the entries devoted to them. Pretty much the entire planet is included in the timezone database.

Cheers

Oh, and if anyone is having trouble "seeing" the 1533 possible timezones.. hit "cancel" on the Rio Remote to back up a level in the heirarchy..

Cheers

Oops! I guess I might have overlooked a feature in the player. I have only recently acquired my first machine and being that the manual is more than a little vague on this area, I didn't realise there was an option called etc. with more timezones on offer. Thanks for the info though, I think I might go bury my head in the sand again, till I have spent more time with this (wonderful) machine.

Don't feel bad about it -- took me 2 years to figure that part out, so I just wanted to speed up anyone else wondering about it.. just hit "cancel" on the remote when in the time zone menus, and it will back you up through the heirarchy.. not so obvious how it works at first.

Cheers

That'll be for two reasons:
1. The manual's pretty vague about everything.
2. Timezones were added after the manual was printed, IIRC. Up to that point, the player used UTC, but assumed that you'd set it to local time, IYSWIM.

Somehow I managed to find my half-hour offset the first time I set my empeg up.
