I have a home movie recorded on a Minus-R disc. It won't play on my desktop computer's DVD drive. That drive will play Plus+R's just fine, so I want to turn this minus-R into a plus+R so that I can play this home movie at my leisure.

My wife, purely by coincidence, just got a Vaio laptop with a DVD burner. It comes with Sonic RecordNow (formerly Roxio formerly Adaptec EZ CD Creator, if I understand the genealogy correctly).

I insert the Minus-R disc into the laptop and it plays fine. I run the RecordNow software and ask it to make an exact copy. It dutifully reads the contents of the source disc and buffers it on the hard drive. Then I insert a blank Plus+R disc into the drive and it tells me the destination disc is different type from the source disc so it can't make an exact copy. Sigh.

Can anyone help?

Never used that software, but can't you just ask it to make an ISO of the original disc and then burn the image onto a fresh disc? I've copied DVDs onto DVD-Rs using that method.

I would try to create first an ISO File form the original DVD-R and then burn this ISO to the new DVD+R.

bye

Darn. And the idea sounded so correct.

Exact same error message, "The media inserted does not match the source media" or some such like that.

Sigh.

Can't you just copy the .VOB files off of the -R onto a +R? I didn't think there was anything particularly clever about video DVDs.

Huh?

Linux: cat /dev/dvd > dvd.iso
Then use k3b (point and click GUI) to burn dvd.iso onto a fresh disc.

Thats really weird. Ive never had any issues with ISO burning, Nero seems much more useful than easy cd creator. You should be able to get a demo of Nero from their website, oem versions are like 10 bucks I think.

That is really strange, I don't think I've ever come across that problem, although I do use k3b almost exclusively nowadays, unless I'm burning on my iBook, it really is a nice piece of software.

I know nothing about them, so if this were true, I wouldn't know. Anyone else think this will work?

yup. Put them in the VIDEO_TS directory on the new disc.

It won't work if the DVD is a CSS encrypted one but you can't use CSS on a writable DVD so yes, in this case it would work.

I forgot to update, just remembered now... Yes, that worked like a charm. Simply burning the files onto the new disc worked.

I am surprised that the "Sonic" product didn't just do that for me automatically.
