That's NOT what this poll is about?

I've seen the new ones, with a "click" button like a ball point pen. Very impressive. And just recently I picked up a tiny little short one that fits perfectly in the side bag of my empeg case next to my digicam and cell phone. Very cool.
Oh. Sorry. Was I hijacking a thread?

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought the context was self-evident. Everybody I've talked to has noticed the same thing here and we are at a loss for an explanation.
So you get two 5-packs of Sharpies, open them, and put them on your desk. Two weeks later? Gone. OK, so get two more 5-packs, wait two weeks. Gone.
Been going on for years now. I have to get to the bottom of this!

I use straight black or blue, of the fine point variety...mainly to mark on writable CDs and DVDs.

Is it just me that has no idea what this means - to me the only meaning of sharpie is a surgical scalpel....

Ah, yes! I see this kind of thing all the time, even in a small, controlled environment (coffee cup turned marker holder). I thought they just had their own little world that they escaped to, similar to HHGTTG.

Two words: tether chain. If they want the Sharpie, they have to take the whole desk with them.
For the single, solitary pen which occupies my office desk, I prevent against thieft by putting a red cap on the blue pen. Pen thiefs can be easily found by browsing their desks for said mismatching pen.
A similar trick may work to not only deter Sharpie thieft, but catch thems that done it. Or, maybe driving nails through the cap (whilst removed) so people can't put them in their pocket and walk away. Well, can't do it painlessly, anyway.

That's a lot of plastic in a landfill. Yay disposability.

I carry one of those in my pocket at all times, along with a small leatherman. It comes in extremely handy.

Does anyhow know how to make those neat sounding whistles with a bic pen? The kind that make the really loopy sounding whistle. I thought it was possible. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anything that reduces disposability is great, but you still have to replace the cartridge fairly often. At least it's mostly metal and not 99% plastic.
Personally, I carry a Pelikan M200. It has an integral ink tank, so all I have to throw away is an ink bottle once every few years, and it's largely glass.
