I want to add a drive to my empeg, but I don't want to use the kernel that formats and all that automatically. I have the V2 final developer image installed with the Pre-Built Hijack kernel with ext3 support and the Telnet server (sorry for no credits, I'm not good with names). To add a drive via the shell, can I just:
1) partition it (fdisk)
2) make the fs (mke2fs)
3) **follow steps to convert to ext3**
4) set it to mount at /drive1 (in fstab)
or is there something else that must be on the drive?

Since this is my first post, I'd like to say thanks for everything you guys do. I've owned my mk2a since SonicBlue discontinued them and wanted one since they were being hand made in England (mk1) and there was that really long waiting list to get one. I was in high school then and didn't have that sort of money. I can normally find everything I need just by searching and never have anything to contribute that other people don't know. I'm just looking for some reassurance. Thanks again.

Sounds like a plan... Can't seem to find the link currently, but IIRC Roger has a howto on building/formatting a drive manually that should cover anything extra required. (Normally used for the largest drives, as the builder tends to fail on those.)

Thanks bonzi.

Can someone explain to me the layout of the hard drive. What is on hda1-hda3 since the music is at hda4 and root is at hda5? Which device would my new drive be, hdc? There isn't a hdb listed in /dev as I would assume. Do I need to create that many partitions on my new drive?

Roger's guide.

You need to create exactly the partitions it tells you to: the Empeg doesn't use /etc/fstab, it uses hardwired partition names.

That link timed out on me. Is there a mirror of it somewhere?

Since I couldn't see the Guide Roger wrote, I set up the drive just like the first drive: with 6 partitions the same size and type as hda, except for partition 4 which I just did until the end of the drive. Should this be correct?

Should be, yes.

I got that partition table set up and all the ext2 file systems made and the swap file system. The only thing I'm uncertain about is what to put on hdc3, the OPUS parition. Can anyone tell me what I need to do with hdc3 after creating the partition?

The hdc3 partition is unused. The only reason it's there, is because the builder (and Roger's instructions) take care to format the secondary drive in such a way that it could be turned into a primary drive later if necessary. If you ever got rid of hda and promoted hdc to the primary drive, that partition would be hda3 -- the dynamic data partition.

There's nothing special you need to do to it now.
