Someone hack the kernel to accept a different remote, the pioneer steering wheel one.. or something similar...THE KENWOOD SUCKS, I CAN"T TAKE it anymore :)

I second that too, I am not willing to give up my Pioneer remote either, but right now it's kinda useless with the Empeg until someone takes the time to figure out the hack....wish I knew Linux better, I would attempt it myself

Wasn't there a thread recently where Frank had posted software to dump IR codes received to the console? I thought that Mark Malleck was able to use that as a starting point for something like what you're trying. Did you guys try that?

I wouldn't try it myself until I have had my player awhile and get to know all of it's nuances...I will have to buckle down and get into the Linux as well, I have been stictly a Windows kinda guy to this point (with a very little of UNIX sprinkled in ha ha) John

Yes, he did. And yes I tried, but none of my other remotes generated any codes on the Empeg. I tried every remote that I had, from car stereo to VCR to TV to home stereo. From Pioneer to Alpine to RCA to Hughes. Nothing bu the Empeg generated any codes. So all the remotes I have must be on a different freq.

I want a patch for this too. I am learning Linux as fast as I can. I am sure some of the others could whip up something faster though.

/dev/ir won't show any codes at all that aren't totally recognised unless you put it into raw mode.

Mike - did you have that tool kicking about which (a) puts it into raw mode and (b) dumps the timings onto the screen?

I have a IR keyboard (http://www.fentek-ind.com/wireless.htm) and wanted to play with the /dev/ir device - but I have no idea how to put it in raw mode.

here's a simple program which will show all IR-codes received.
If you start it without arguments, it is in normal mode; if you give one or more arguments, it will be in raw mode :

normal mode:

# ./trace_ir

raw mode:

# ./trace_ir raw

Frank, thanks a lot for the program. A couple questions, though:
- Can I send this output to blitoutput? I need to get the codes for my SW remote and don't have a laptop handy. I'd like to just scroll each new code read to the screen so I can read it.
- How do I quit from trace_ir?

Yes, though in raw mode all codes won't fit on the display

Press CTRL-C to terminate, which reminds me of the fact that if the default init isn't executed, the CTRL-C doesn't work!
if you've got a custom init, make sure to exec /sbin/[original init] at the end
You can also kill the process : kill [pid], where pid can be found in the output of command : ps

I figured CTRL-C was it, but I couldn't get it to work over HyperTerminal. If I piped it to Blitoutput, I could run it in the background(not in raw mode) and then kill it, but if it's in the foreground and CTRL-C doesn't stop it, then what? (I had to yank the plug once, sweating bullets because I had the drives rw)
Also, any idea why I got the error from blit?

then you must pull the plug... look at this thread for details

As long as there hasn't been any recent writing on disk, you're pretty safe. Use emplode to synchronize and it will mark the disk as OK again.
I've rebooted a lot of times when mounted rw, without any problems (yet)...

Also, any idea why I got the error from blit?
I assume you use blitoutput, which uses the front-panel buttons to scroll through the text, so it is trying to access /dev/ir, which is used by ir_dump.
Try blitecho instead:

ir_dump | while read CODE

do

	echo $CODE | blitecho

done

Sorry for all the confusion. I got the new init to work, and I'm trying to put the IR-code to the display, but I can't find ir_dump. Is it different from trace_ir?

I was afraid of that, 'cuz that means something else is wrong. I've attached the script file I made from your posted code, irlog. It still outputs to stdout, and nothing to the display. Any ideas?

My fault; It is sending out to STDERR instead of STDOUT.
So the following should work :

trace_ir 2>&1 | while read CODE

do

   echo "$CODE" | blitecho

done

maybe you should also put some waiting time in the loop, to let the codes scroll slowly. Unfortunately sleep isn't available in the default dev-image, but I think I saw it in another thread.

Thanks for the fix. I'd have been lost otherwise.
Speaking of being lost...I can now get the ilog script to run and send IR-codes to the display, but only if I 'q' at the terminal and start irlog that way. When picker tries to start it, it doesn't do anything. I've attached my pick_list file, if that helps.

blitecho expects the file ascii.raw in the directory it is being executed, maybe that's causing the problem?
