They've been bought by switchboard.com and they've changed their layout. I can't see where to log in any more, and therefore can't get the detailed map data that GPSapp uses.

Oh noes!

Actually they've always been a switchboard service.

However, they seem to have switched to a microsoft mapping/routing application (mappoint). They probably can't get the actual GPS coordinates of the turns of of that stuff either. The images seem to be generated on their backend, I don't yet see if the vector is somehow encoded in a hidden variable in the HTML.

I did a little research and I think I found a way to extract the Lat,Lon point data from a driving directions route generated from Google Maps. Or has someone already done this? The only stumbling block is going to be finding out which points correspond to a turn, so we can have a proper turn-by-turn route file with shape points.

I'd so totally love to use Google maps for that.

cool- i think I figured out pretty much how to parse the directions and waypoints out, when I get some time I'll see about finishing up the last part which is converting the position data to the weird UTM format that GPSApp needs for it's route files.

Now, if someone could code all of that into a single Java application that did all the necessary screen scraping and webpage retrieving, and which handled the FTPing of the route files onto the empeg, then we'd have the killer app...
