I imagine that it's "local station screwing up", but I keep getting this problem when recording network HDTV on the DirecTiVo. It'll be an HD signal, but it'll recompress in both axes it so that it's letterboxed all the way around. Most of the time when it happens it'll either be that way for the entire show or just during one between-commercial segment, but I just watched one that switched during a segment, and I noticed that it changed audio formats, too, from Dolby Digital 3/0 when correct to DD 2/1 when super-letterboxed (if that's not a standard nomenclature, that's 3 front channels versus 2 fronts and one surround).

Anyone else seen this?

Yeah, I've seen that too. I'm pretty sure that ER did that a couple times last season, so it might not be your local station. I guess the networks are still getting this HD stuff down.

It is likely your local station not fully used to HD yet. Last January, I noticed some quirks with the local CBS station deciding for a time to expand all 4:3 content to 16:9, but eventually they backed off doing that. I'd also notice odd issues at times when they would switch to commercials, as they used to switch to a lower resolution for them, and not always switch back quickly when the commercials were back.

The local FOX station seems to be the best with HD, though usually commercial breaks sound odd when they try to upsample the sometimes mono sound to 5.1 to match what was on at that time. They stopped changing the sound format during a show as they got complaints that some people would miss the first few seconds of the show returning from break as their recievers switched formats.

ABC and PBS here are still only digital, and not HD. NBC and UPN still lack even basic digital transmitters.

Yeah, every time I've seen that happen it's because the local station screwed up its letterboxing and such when rebroadcasting their network feed. Complain.

In all the cases I've seen, it's the satellite feed from NYC on DirecTV. I suppose I should complain to DirecTV.
