Hi,
I was trolling ebay for a touchscreen LCD monitor and I came across this: http://tinyurl.com/dkr4e Looks like the Visteon unit on display at CES2003. Is it the same, or a cheap knock off?

Negtive. I don't think it's the same as that visteon unit. It looks a lot like a bunch of other double-din touchscreen Car DVD players I've seen advertised in Crutchfield recently.

That is actually quite cool, and approx. £300, not too expensive, if only I had a double DIN in the smart..... and wasn't worried about it getting knicked.

Kennedy was the thing that lived in the boot (trunk) and pretended to be a CD changer. You're thinking of Camelot, but your link has a much bigger screen than Camelot -- it fills almost the whole double-DIN area, whereas Camelot's left much more room for buttons.

Touchscreen DIN units though. Mmmmmm. Just asking to have a new mainboard squeezed into them (Camelot was literally begging for it ) Hugo

Hadn't checked the board for a while - I read the posts above and had to check my stash - spare Camelot all safe and tucked up! Phew! I'd miss the little blighter if he'd been kidnapped!

This is where open source firmware would really improve the product. The interface looks horrendous, but it's really a promising product. One USB port for a hard drive, and some good firmware and the thing would be amazing. It's got the hard buttons that are a must, and the touch screen which would be great for searching.
The only downside apart from not having the empeg firmware is that it'd suck to have a large touch screen that you couldn't use for navigation.

Sheesh, you drop the ball on something for four measly years and suddenly you aren't the only player any more. There's a lesson there somewhere.

I worked (and still do) for Visteon in the UK. I have moved slightly (geographically and job-wise), but brought my stash of empeg-related prototypes with me, as there didn't appear to be anyone who shared my belief that the market needed those sorts of products They are appearing now, but the OEMs are now scared of the RIAA and similar and seem to be going for the iPod-enabled hype, even using that phrase to describe USB Mass Storage connections!)
With the current Rio situation, I am not sure who I would give them back to, even if they could prise them from my grubby little hands! They take turns in my car (odd that they all fit my car isn't it ), reminding me of what could have been, and providing the soundtrack to my own little world!! It's nice here - you should visit!

Saw the double-DIN the otehr day while browsing Engadget.
Is it just me or does anyone else think they should have been able to put all that into a single DIN form factor? Pioneer and these other car audio companies seem like they're stuck in the 80's.

I think it's just you.
The thing needs two spindles. It has to play CDs, and you have to have map data. On top of that, it needs a decent sized screen. There's no way to get all that in a single DIN.
Most (all?) oem nav units are about double din size and have a box in the trunk. Getting it all into a doubble-din sized slot is imppressive.

Take a look at the Pioneer Avic N1/N2. I just finished installing one along with my empeg in my new Mustang. Very nice single DIN unit that does about everything you could imagine (short of having massive amounts of MP3 storage). It does have a small separate brain/breakout box. Between it and the empeg I've now got 60 Gigs of mp3s, GPS navigation, DVD player, 6.5 inch screen, radio, voice recognition, and CD player in 2 DINs. Oh and capability for XM with NavTraffic, hookup for backup camera, spare AV input, spare AV output if I want any of that in the future. Slick.

But it looks like it's single spindle even with an add on box, so you can't navigate and listen to a CD at the same time. Well, you can put the nav disc in, load your route and eject it, but that doesn't seem practical. Which basically means it needs the empeg there to provide music. It looks nice though, I'd love any sort of in dash navigation that complimented my empeg.

Yeah, it does have memory for that, but I don't know how well it works and I'd agree it may not be practical. I suspect Pioneer's answer to that is to attach a CD changer which which I would do anyway if I didn't have an empeg. 10 CDs in a changer isn't enough, let alone one in the dash. Or you could use <shudder>the radio</shudder>.

It would be nice if the dvd discs could live in a changer, that way I would never have to touch them. The reason I wanted one was to have in car media, but 2K for gps/nav and gyro gismo seems pricey especially if i need to eject the nav discs to play dvds.
