When my player starts up after I installed HiJack I get the following error message. hda:diskerror:read_intr. What is this? I hate that I have so many posts up here but Im not a hacker. Also when my player starts the screen is completely blank and I have to reselect my random and playlist options.

Hardware fault of some kind. Installing hijack has made it visible. Normally it just gets sent out on the serial port.

It means you either have hard disk trouble, or, if you're 100 percent certain you aren't having hardware disk or cable trouble, then it might mean you need to do a full erase of the dynamic data partition.
I had exactly that problem, where it was refusing to read the playlist from the scratch partition. After making certain that there was no hardware trouble with the disk, I did the full erase of the dynamic data partition and the problem went away and everything worked again.

You mean overwriting it? If so then it meant you had a bad sector and overwriting it made the drive remap it with a spare one.

Please post a serial log of the boot.
Is the player actually functional?
I have seen this error on a player with a dead ethernet chip that was pulling down data lines.

In hypterterminal, at the shell prompt. You must have the developer image installed to be able to get to the shell prompt.

Ok I did the full erase and I still have the problem. When I type the command I get the following on my player, Tweak Order No Matching Source.

Quote: Ok I did the full erase and I still have the problem.
Please clarify exactly what you did, and what's still happening.
Did you actually get to a shell prompt and type cat /dev/zero >/dev/hda3 and did that seem to work as described here?
And, if so, is the problem you still have the "HDA: Read_intr" error message when you select a playlist or boot the player?
If that's the case (and you really did do that command at a shell prompt, then you definitely have hardware problems with the disk drive, it's one of the problems described here. There is a long list of possible hardware problems, please go through that list.

When you type which command?
If you're saying that when you type cat /dev/zero >/dev/hda3 you get "tweak order no matching source", then it's because you aren't at a shell prompt when you do it. You must be at a shell prompt before you can enter shell commands. Please carefully read these instructions word for word and make sure you don't miss anything. For example, if you don't have the developer version of the player firmware installed, you can't get to the shell prompt.

Yeah, I just tried it. When I type cat /dev/zero >/dev/hda3 without being at the shell prompt, I get a tweak order message too.
YOU ARE NOT DOING IT RIGHT.
YOU MUST BE AT A SHELL PROMPT.
RE-READ THOSE HYPERTERMINAL INSTRUCTIONS.

I guess it might be an idea if that FAQ entry explained how to tell whether you're "at a shell prompt" or not...

OK I figured out how to get to the shell prompt. When I press q to get there the line reads, empeg:/empeg/bin#, is this where I enter the command to erase the data partition?

Ok that solved the problem. Now can someone tell me how to run jEmplode and Emphatic. Emphatic tells you to open a DTD file. What do you use to open this? Are there detailed instructions on how to use these programs somewhere? There arent any directions on either site. Thanks everyone for your help.

You probably don't really want to run Emphatic unless you REALLY want to view your song lyrics. It does other useful stuff, but it's complicated to configure if you don't know what you're doing.
jEmplode is easier. Just install the latest java runtime from the sun website, download the .jar file from the link at the top of the page, then double click on the .jar file. It should open and be pretty similar to emplode.
EDIT: gee...that's about the same instructions as on the jEmplode site.

You're right.
It is, of course, the first time anyone has ever had a problem with it, but you're right.

Perhaps we need an FAAQ (Frequently Asked and Anticipated Questions)?
