How do you have the Airport Express set up currently? In the Airport Admin utility, it has "Create a Wireless Network" or "Join an Existing Wireless Network" as an option. Also, it would be good to know what is set on the WDS page.

Tom, do you know if the ethernet port on the airport express works with the empeg? Some ethernet chipsets don't seem to like the empeg.

Also, is it crossover autosensing? Or do we need to check that Thinfourth is using the right kind of cable?

I would try a pink one if I were you

Welcome back!!!

Cheers

Cris.

PS - Hold the ends of the patch cord together side by side and see if the colours are in the same order, my guess is you need a cross over and you have a straight, they are usually tagged to indicate they are a X-OVR.

pink one

The only two I've owned were yellow, from my collection of cables through the ages, but, you're right, they're clearly marked crossover.

....and again, welcome!

Weird. I've never seen a cable clearly marked as anything, crossover cables definitely included. You Brits must like labelling things better than us Yanks.

Paul, If you want a crossover cable, I can mail you one today, if it works, bung us three quid sometime (£5.99 in Maplins), If not mail it back to me. I have no use for one anymore.

In my experience (I live in California), a patch cable (crossover) is labeled as such with printed letters on the insulation. Most are yellow or orange, though I have seen a grey one.

My crossover cables are usualy whatever color I made them. I swore off RJ45 connectors years ago, but I still seem to find myself with a crimper every time I need a patch cable. That said, on the comercial side I never noticed any sort of color theme.

At work we've got a couple of the plastic crossover adapters that go on one end of any strait through cable and turn it into a crossover. Of course, these always find homes somewhere permanent when they really shouldn't.

Ditto. Never noticed any colour scheme. Somebody gave me a bunch of mixed premade cables and they were bizarrely all hot pink colour.

I've found red to be a common crossover cable color, though not exclusive from either direction.

FWIW, I'd expect the Airport Express to do the whole auto internal cross over thing like pretty much all Apple gear made in the last few years so you probably don't need a dedicated crossover cable.

I looked for Auto MDI/MDIX support but it doesn't list it on the Apple webpages.

A few years ago, we purged all straight-through cables that were red, and all cross-over cables that were not red. It definately made digging through the bucket-o-cables much easier.

Oh, and our patch panels are generally parti-colored mixes of cables. I'm partially color blind so it doesn't bother me too much, and it makes tracing individual cables a whole lot easier.

okay i have tried both kind of cable while on the ship and got nowhere it asks nasty complicated questions about IP numbers being incorrect when they seem correct to my tiny IT brain.

i shall have a shot again later when i can be arsed to drag the airport express out from its hiding hole being the big stereo
