I am trying to hook up my Tivo (which has a USB wifi card attached to it) to my computer (which also has a USB wifi card attached to it.) I do not have a router of any kind, but I was told I could still link the two wirelessly so I can transfer the programs off my tivo to the computer (i use the telephone line to do the updates) Is there a way to do this without a router? I tried to and got the my music and my pictures folder to link up, but I couldn't get the tivo to show up on my tivo desktop.)

I think so. You want to put them in ad-hoc mode.

I had two devices talk to one another without a router before. As he said, you need to put the wireless adapter in Ad-hoc mode. but I'm not sure if you can do that on the Tivo. I seem to recall you can only set up the DHCP settings.

Well, that's really two different things.

I'd take a look at the docs for the adpater and see how it says to put it in ad-hoc mode. (For that matter, how does it know what network to join?) Anyway, what I'm getting at is that you might be able to install it on a "normal" computer, set it to ad-hoc mode, then plug it back into the TiVo. I have no idea that that will actually work, but it's a possibility.

Usually those adapters require the OS to set things. I've only ever seen dedicated APs or ethernet converters which remember the settings.
