It seems to me that unless you're making money off of the copy (of whatever), there shouldn't be any intrinsic 'penalty' for owning said copy.
Sure, sure- all these legal attacks are against the distributors, but then a search engine isn't a distributor at all, as is pointed out in the article.
Heck, a lot of bands post the lyrics on their own website.
And what about broadcasting the lyrics to the masses via radio?

From the article:

Quote:
Copying the words out of a CD booklet and posting them on the net is as much an infringement as ripping the tracks and posting them, though arguably less harmful to the artist concerned.

Of course, it is beneficial to the artists concerned, as interesting lyrics will often prompt somebody to buy a CD; nobody buys records to read the lyrics. The only guys perhaps marginally harmed are tablature or score publishers, who, as usual, hide behind fake concern for artist's interest. Why are artists tolerating this? They should start treating major labels as what they are: not very good marketing/PR companies.

Not to mention the people who search for the artist/song by way of lyrics snippets (and then go out and purchase the music).

Think of this as a good thing. It's just one more example of the music industry (i.e., major labels and their henchmen, the RIAA) shooting themselves in the foot, bringing just a little bit closer the day when the whole music distribution paradigm changes and the major record labels become a thing of the past.

Exactly. Not to mention alienating all of the fans who are mostly responsible for doing the foot work on this.

I've just taught my pal's son the licks for "Spike Driver's Blues", with a nice little run that a guy taught me in a pub on the west coast of Ireland, does anyone have an address where I can send the royalties before I get the heavy knock on the door? - I feel a responsibility to the music publishing industry who have done nothing towards my musical education these last 50 years.

It worked earlier. And really sounded like it *had* to be a spoof. Except it (apparently) wasn't. (??)

It was a link to a story claiming the guy who wrote the lyric searchware got an apology from from RIAA (or whoever the jerks were) for the abusive letter they sent him.

Cheers

Here's a different link to the same story. Also, the potential defendant's statement.
