Just wondering if anybody here felt the explosion this morning? If I was awake at 6am (fat chance!) I probably would have, I am far down south but apparently it was felt in Folkstone which is further away (far south east).

Interestingly it measured 2.4 on the richter scale (PDF), presumably the effects that people felt far away were from a pressure wave because a 2.4 event wouldn't be felt more than a few tens of miles away.

edit: Just been reading Pistonheads (car enthusiast site) and this thread is pretty cool, people being woken up and then posting on the forum.
edit 2: Good video here, better than anything I've seen on the news.

Gareth

My sister was in Hemel and apparently got woken up by a bang noise but then went back to sleep. I'm over in Cockfosters and there is a huge grey/black cloud over everything. Didn't notice a thing but I was fast asleep at 6am.

I'm over in Highgate and the sky's a little darker than normal, but if I didn't know about the fire, I'd have put it down to low clouds and mist -- it's hard to tell.

Edit: Actually, taking another look out of the window now that the Sun's moved round a bit, I'd like to retract that statement -- see the attached.

Me neither -- I was fast asleep at 6am.

Something woke me up at around 6am this morning. Chances are it was that.

Sky was very black this afternoon.

I caught this evening "Explosion in London" on local news recap and, of course, thought "Not again!". CNN set me straight. It's a miracle that nobody was killed...

I thought I heard on the news here that there were deaths but thankfully I must have mis-heard.

I had a quick look on the Fox News website to see what their take on it was. The main headline was

"EXPLOSION IN LONDON"

And when you clicked on the link you got

"LONDONS BURNING"

Or something equally incorrect.

Yeah. Everybody seems to be reporting it as London for some reason. I guess "A place near London is burning!" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

It seems that Fox News knows of two places in England: London and Scotland.

I wonder if I'll get paid on Friday. This company handles my payroll:

Quote:
Meanwhile Northgate Information Solutions, one of the UK's leading suppliers of specialist software for human resources, said four of its employees had been taken to hospital but were later discharged.

In a statement to the stock market, Northgate said: "The fabric of the building and the fixtures and equipment inside have been badly damaged. The back-up systems that were in place have also been rendered inoperable.

"Northgate's ability to service its customers has therefore been temporarily affected."

What a great backup system they have in place

I bet it was 486 sat next to the 386 that does all the real work, all sat on the end of "the guy from IT"'s desk.

I hope you get paid, sure is a bad time not to get paid

Cheers

Cris.

I haven't seen any photos of the damage, but time will tell whether the companie(s) have proper backup plans in place. 3Com's UK head office is nearby, as is Dixon's Stores Group, however I doubt the customer service of the latter company will be affected at all.

It also seems that they were running a hosting facility from teh building, the website of Richer Sounds a large indepedent audio/video dealer has gone down along with Northgate's own site.

Surely Ireland is a part of Scotland, right?
