My son sold his old car and pulled his empeg out of it at the time of the sale. He bought a new Mustang GT (with double DIN). He's been toying with a different head unit but really there is nothing out there even close to the functionality of the EMPEG. There are of course a lot of slicker looking units but they just don't cut it for playing music.

Am I crazy for urging him to install the empeg in his new car? How do the double to single DIN adapters look? I guess he could get the best of both worlds and install a single DIN and the empeg.

Any recommendations?

As if you'd even get an objective answer to that question on this BBS.

Yup.

Well, since I'm not paying for it I'd say he should get a single din nav with a motorized screen. Install it above the empeg. A purist would plug the nav into the empeg, but if it can mix voice promts over it's aux input, do it that way.

For radio, sat radio, navigation and surround sound there are plenty of better options, but for listening to your own music collection, there's nothing that comes close to the empeg.

I hate to be contrary but I believe what's shown is a 1.5 Din. Same as in my Jeep.

Yup, that seems like a 1.5din adapter, but the idea's the same. The main question is the plastic finish. I havn't been in a new mustang, but I doubt matching textures is going to be terribly important. The generic metra finish rarely offends, however.

I made mine out of 1/8" metal plate and used flat black paint to match the rest of the dash. Your right, the plastic one’s didn’t match the texture very well (at least in my Jeep) and seemed flimsy.

I just did an install on my friend's Explorer with 1.5 DIN hole. We got a Scosche adapter that has a very small pocket beneath the head unit. It fits really nice with the look of his dash. I will try and have him take a pic.

See this post for pics of my mustang double DIN install.

Mike,

Thanks for the great pics. Do you wish you had put the Pioneer above the empeg now?

His prior install was in a DIN and a half. The double DIN is just huge. I know he really wants XMRadio so he can look at the double install with a head unit with XM built in.

I actually arranged them that way on purpose. That way the screen on the pioneer can fold out into the recessed stereo area. If it was in the top slot it wouldn't be able to fold out as far (and I'd be viewing the LCD at a less than ideal angle) because the top of the dash is in the way and it would block the AC vents. Anyway, it works out pretty well as I only have the LCD out when using the navigation.

Thanks for the info. The wife has a Jeep too (no not matching, that would be too much) and I just got her an empeg (new in the box, cool!) for Christmas and need to install it. I didn't want to have to make another adapter.

Is that the Pioneer AVIC N2 you have?

I really like the idea of the AVIC-Z1 except it does not appear to support MP3s on the hard drive. It looks as if you will have to rip them from the built in DVD drive.

I really like Garmin navigation because we do so many custom maps of our assets. They have the 2730 coming out in January which you can drag and drop MP3s on the built in HD but they have not announced how big the HD is.

Yes it is. Nice unit, I've been pretty happy with it so far.
