Who actually buys this stuff?? "Ordinary USB cable isn't designed to meet the new high speed demand. High attenuation can occur, which may result in "clipped" sound, lost frames of video when capturing, and connection failure." Right...

I've run USB 2.0 over 2 croc clips before and it was fine.

They were probably high-speed croc clips.

Yeah but that's only "The Absolute Sound magazine recognized Kimber Palladian as its Power Cord of the Year for 2002."

Power cord technology must have moved on a lot since then

The USB 2.0 High Speed cable specification has a different twist pitch and better shielding than old USB cables. Having spent more time worrying about USB connectivity problems than most people, I can absolutely vouch that it is a bad idea to use a USB 1.1 cable with a 480Mbit link. Combine that with, say, front panel ports (which are usually dodgy in their own right) and I have seen repeatable failures in a sizeable percentage of tests.

Of course you don't pay Monster Cable prices - you get them from an online vendor for about a tenth the price. What a shame it's almost impossible to buy good value cables in the high street now - the "premium" brands have it sewn up (thanks to the *vast* profit margin).

It reminds me of something Bitt said in a similar thread something like 'I only use Western Digital drives because they bring out the colour in my jpegs' or something similar, of course he had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he posted it.

To be honest, I do use stuff like monster cables at work. We have hard disc units on our news cameras and Sony will relieve you of £120 for a cable, it's nothing particularly special, 6 pin with a locking mech on one end and a 4 pin right angle on the other. The monster-type cables last on average 6 months whereas your bargain bucket Scan sourced cable is dead in a day.

That's because your jpegs only have colors, and no colour. You should have gone with Seagate.

How about something like this...

Palladian incorporates a special copper optimized for 120 volt AC wall voltage, as well as a special conductor dielectric that is devoid of performance robbing color doping, affording an uninhibited flow of current and voltage.

Ohmigod! Who writes this stuff?!

di·e·lec·tric: A nonconductor of electricity, especially a substance with electrical conductivity of less than a millionth (10^-6) of a siemens.

USB Cables are a touchy subject with me, at the moment: I returned a USB device to the (Very Helpful) manufacturer, claiming it to be faulty, and subsequently discovered that the cable had been chewed by a rat. Something that only came to light when it ran across our lounge on a Sunday night - we get this sort of thing in the Country every few years.
Along the same lines, or cables, I've been wondering whether there's any real difference between Cat5 and Cat6 cables?

In theory, perhaps. In practice, no. While cat6 is a "better" cable, there are no actual standards that work over cat6 that don't work over cat5.

Of course, if you want your 1's and 0's to have sharp peaks, you should only use cat6. Your mp3's will sound much better if you upload them to your empeg using a cat6 cable.

I thought it was a matter of the number of twists per unit length, giving you a different speed rating. I am not sure about cat5 vs cat6, but I know that cat3 cannot coherently support 100Mbps LAN links (forcing me to set all of the machines in my local cube farm to fixed 10Mbps / half-duplex to avoid horrible network performance).

Cat6 has more insulation in the cable too. It has a plastic piece that separates the cable into 4 channels...one for each of the pairs. I'm assuming this is to prevent crosstalk.

It's a pain in the arse when it comes to putting the ends on the cables though, because you have to cut and peel back the sleeve, cut the plastic piece out, then push the sleeve back up so that when you put the connector on it has something to grab on to.

I think you can make longer runs with Cat6 than Cat5 too.

People actually buy this stuff!!?? They put a $1000, 6 ft. power cord at the end of a ~50 ft. run of $25 12-2 romex.

This is insane! These guys are just around the corner form where I live. Their Opus MM interconnects are priced around $16k!

That is the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

http://www.transparentcable.com/products/audio/opus_mm_spkcable.html

To keep resonance from obscuring the nuances of the music signal as it travels through the cable and network, a large mass of epoxy damping material encapsulates the Opus MM network, which is then encased with carbon fiber. The network pod sits upon a thick acrylic plinth supported by four adjustable feet, to insure stable 4-point contact and decouple the network from room borne resonance.

Not going to happen unless they change the laws of physics or the ethernet standard. My vauge memory from my EE networking class is that CSMA/CD won't work right if network nodes don't know if they stepped on someone else's transmission, which is determined by the packet length and the speed of electrons through coper.

Of course, longer runs will probably work most of the time, but there's no garantee, and they will degrade the speed of the network.

Yes, according to my boss you can only do QoS on CAT6 cable..... I nearly pissed myself laughing.

How do you define a longer run: I was thinking of reaching my daughter's lair by going up 2 storeys, across the roof space and down again - I haven't measured it, but it's a lot further than drilling a hole in the window frames and going the 15 feet up the outside of the house. However, I'm under pressure for appearances, as I've already got wires all over the place and, if you've got 3 foot thick walls, you have to go round not through - the four aerials on the chimney (DAB, FM, TV, High Gain TV)and their wiring don't help my case!

The standard says 100 meters of cable, which should get you a good long ways in a residential setting. If you throw a switch anywhere in the middle, you reset your limit.

How much you can stretch it, I'm not sure about.

I believe that GigE is not CSMA/CD, unlike prior versions of Ethernet. But I might be making that up.

Not if you have a collection of meter long drill bits you don't

You can expect Cat5 to last about a year outside if it's on a south facing wall, so running it inside is always best if you can get away with it, but cat5 is butt ugly if you ask me!

Just let me know when you are ready...

This demonstrates the "Manana" effect of retirement, getting the power through to the sheds is still at about No.3 on my list, but, in the meantime I've figured out how to do it with three shorter holes. About six months in, the inertia of thinking you should be doing something all the working day, like you've done for the past 40 years, runs out and it dawns on you that, in my case, all those books you've been buying to read when you retire, are still sitting on the shelves!
In my case, a chance encounter with a 92 year old relative has led to looking closely at the family tree, but also to volunteering for some pretty healthy voluntary work in the summer.

By the look of this, all the IEEE 802.3 stuff, up to and including 10GBASE-whatever, is CSMA/CD. I seem to remember, very vaguelly, an ancient competition of 100Mb/s proposals, one keeping the old 10Mb/s Ethernet frame format, another MAC protocol.
