I am noticing a occasional loud metallic clicking sound coming from the hard disk, so I have been trying to back up 12 gig of mp3s off of my player using displayserver and winHTTrack. I have been able to get about 1/3 of the files done, then displayserver gives up and the player has to be rebooted. Has anyone else manged to get their player backed up?

1/3 of 12 gigs sounds about right: The backup file has a size limit of 4 gigs. That's essentially a bug. There is currently no work-around.

If you want to back up your MP3's, don't use the "backup" feature on displayserver. Just save them off one at a time, or use a WebWhacker-type product to do the whole thing at once. Let us know how it goes.

And I hope that metallic clicking doesn't get worse. That's the sound my hard disk made when it failed, and I only got about 5 minutes worth of warning between the time I noticed the problem and the time the hard disk failed completely.

Its not the backup file im trying to make. im using a program similar to webwhacker to download all of the mp3s. It ignores the empeg applet, the backup tar file, and the sysinfo, but downloads all the mp3s. It finds the links to all of the files, but about 1/3 of the way through, the empeg stops sending and has to be rebooted to access displayserver again.

There are probably some memory-leaks left in displayserver causing this behaviour. You could try raising the "ReserveCache"-parameter in the ini file.
Also check that the webwacker isn't trying to download a lot of files simultaneously, as this will probably make memory problems worse.

Out of curiosity: which of your disks failed? The original (empag) one or the one you added?

It was the original 4gb drive that came in that Mark1. But remember, I got the player second-hand, and also managed to abuse it a bit while it was in my care.

And anyway, disks of that capacity are cheap, and since my MP3 collection was reasonably well organized on my PC's hard disk, it wasn't that big of a deal to put things back in order again.

I have already set it to only get 1 file at a time, I noticed that the transfer gets much further along that way. Im trying to figure out how to get the program to only download x number of files at a time so I can get this done in 3 gig chunks maybe. This may be an annoying linux newbie question, but can someone explain how I can edit the ini file?

I know I am supposed to have my mp3s on my hard disk, but I have had to reformat it since I ripped all the cds originally. I have all the 175 cds here, but ripping them took a lot of time. I need to track down all the mp3s that were encoded with audiocatalyst and redo them with lame anyway. I have been using a utility called encspot to look at the files and see what encoder they were made by, the bit rate, whether or not they have been cut, the quality(based on encoder/bitrate) and i can see the bitrate histogram for each file if I want to.

Its in alpha right now.
If you have giant directories-say more than 3000 files- it will be slow to display them all. But my files are generally grouped by artist-album so its not a problem for me.
