Today I did something fun.

I got some weatherproof outdoor speakers and hung them under the eaves on the back deck above the hot tub. Ran the wires through the attic to the family room, where the Mark1 feeds a little shelf-system "boom box" kind of stereo. It's a pretty cheap stereo, but it sounds decent enough.

Works great. Listen to the Empeg while watching the sunset (and moonrise) from the hot tub. The world is a very cool place.

Tomorrow, I'll stick an IR repeater in the kitchen windowsill so I can control track-switch/volume from the hot tub, too.

But here's my question: The little "boom box" that's doing the amplificationizing originally had 3-ohm speakers connected to it. I'm just unplugging the original speakers and plugging the outdoor speakers into where the originals used to be. These outdoor speakers are 8-ohm jobs, at the end of a 100-foot run of speaker wire.

So am I going to let the smoke out of my boom box? I ran it for about an hour so far today and it seems fine (although the 8-ohm speakers are not as loud as the 3-ohm ones were, which I expected is what would happen). The boom box itself does not state any specifications for speakers, since it was only ever intended to drive the speakers that came with it.

You only have to worry about the genie if you reduce the load on the amplifier and draw more current. Increasing the load will result in lower output as you would guess, and the speaker lead resistance just gets tacked on to the speaker impedance.

That's great news, thanks!

I was hoping that would be the case, and I'd kind of suspected it, I just didn't know for sure. Good to know that I don't have to get another amplifier for these outdoor speakers.

Now to go snag an IR repeater. Anyone have any tips on waterproofing the Kenwood remote?

orange]Increasing the load will result in lower output

ndeed, but be careful for clipping: when the amp's output is insufficient to drive the speakers they (the speakers) might their blue smoke . . .

don't dunk it underwater? i know. just kidding. actually, when i got the x10 and i had a speaker hooked up in the bathroom, i just dropped the remote in this plastic baggie i got from a cigar store. it worked great to keep it dry in the shower.

as an afterthought, this is essentially the same solution, but a bit neater. if you have one of those eurosealers, you could create a sort of custom fitted platic baggie to keep the remote in. it would work pretty well.

I would guess that the currents running in the remote are so low, that even submerging the whole damn thing in water (with low salt content of course) would probably not affect it at all. The remotes are fairly cheap, be interesting to see how it would hold up.

A coupl'a years ago my Palm IIIx was completely submerged for about 5 minutes (note: never let drunken friends hold your palm pilot in their pocket...they just might have a tendency to jump into a fountain) ... took it home, cracked it open, took a blow dryer to it, and tada! started right up. Not very relevant, but dunking the remote would probably not do much harm as 101 says. I like the vacuum bag idea!

The keys in the remote will be very difficult to dry out should water penetrate between the layers.

Been there done that. (not with the kenwood remote, but one built like it)

or you could just hang out till the VR of the Mk][ comes out and set up a microphone.

this is actually one of my favourite things, playing calming music in the car. I nearly missed the ferry to Fraser Island because this playlist had put me to sleep!
Fave artists include
Moby
Mazzy Star
Kinobe (soundphiles is fantastic)
Jamiroquai
Leftfield

Off topic i know, but i love the concept.
