Hello,
I have tried to upgrade the hard disks of my riocar Mark2 to a bigger hard disk, but the more I tried the bigger the trouble was. And now it's not possible to run the empeg even if I put back my old disk.
I have tried several disks from 10, 20, 40 to 80 GB but there is always no hard disk found. I also tried to change the IDE Cable of my old Mark 1 Player to the Mark 2 Player, but it helps nothing. The hard disk in my old player works fine and I could run the diskbuilderimage and the developerimage and everything is fine.
Could anybody see in my log what the problem is?
I'm trying now since Monday to reanimate my empeg!!!

Something is wrong with the hard disk cable. Quite possibly you may have pulled one of the connectors away from the ribbon cable, so that some of the wires are no longer making contact -- cable likely needs to be recrimped/replaced, or maybe just pushed more firmly into place at both ends.

Or, if it's not the cable, then the IDE header (the 44-pin thingie) on the Empeg main board is damaged. This is a common failure, quite repairable in the right hands.

I think I've checked the cable because I took the one of my old Mark1, and I think they are compatible with the only difference that the Mark 1 has only one connector. Is that right?.
I've looked also at the IDE header but I can't see any damage on that as discribed in the FAQ at Riocar.org

Maybe I have to take look at this by a professional!

Thank you for quick response

If you were to flash it with the latest Hijack kernel, then we'd see more information about the failure..

No, that's not a Hijack kernel.

Click on the Hijack link at the top of this page to visit the Hijack site, and pull down/install the v461.hijack.mk2.zImage file.

Cheers

Ewww... It looks like one of your data lines is tied high - either from cable damage or header damage...

Note that the last bit of the second byte is always a 1...

Inspect your cable very carefully, along with the header pins connecting to the main board. Also look for any damage on the cable or bent pins on the drive.

Yes. That's pin-6. For reference, pin-1 is the the dark stripe on one edge of the IDE cable.

Thank you for your posts,

but I can't find any loose pins on the IDE Conector even under magnification.
I have built the HD with the diskbuilder image on my Mark 1 and installed the consumer image and everything is fine.
Afterwards I took the HD with the same IDE Cable from my Mark 1 to my Mark2 and the following things appear on the log.
Code:

ide_data_test: wrote 0x0000 read 0x0100
ide_data_test: wrote 0xffff read 0xffff
ide_data_test: wrote 0xaaaa read 0xabaa
ide_data_test: wrote 0x5555 read 0x5555

ide_data_test: wrote 0x0000 read 0x0100
ide_data_test: wrote 0xffff read 0xffff

I hope the cable is compatible and the partition of the HD is also compatible between Mark 1 and Mark 2 ?

Maybe I should take the Motherboard out of the empeg and look under the back side if something is loose or would it help using Contact spray? Or could I take a gauge to measure the pins?

I have no other ideas.

There's that stuck data line again. Definitely hardware trouble with that unit.

Time to seek professional help, I think.
